Shelter Won't Back Down in Ellen's Doggie Dilemma

Ellen DeGeneres’ week has gone to the dogs, and it just keeps getting worse.

Yesterday, Ellen made a tearful plea on her show for an animal shelter to return the dog they confiscated after Ellen adopted it but gave it to a friend when the pup became too much to handle.

The shelter owner is now claiming that she’s received death threats and is afraid for her safety!

Still, a lawyer for the owner says there are no plans to return the dog, and that the shelter won’t be “bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world.”

The adorable pup, named Iggy, was adopted from the Pasadena-based Mutts and Moms animal shelter. But Ellen gave it to her hairdresser’s young daughters.

The shelter soon stepped in and took the dog back, saying that Ellen had violated a legal agreement that if she couldn’t keep the pup she’d hand it back to the shelter. In addition, the shelter says it can’t give puppies to families with kids younger than 14.

Yesterday, Ellen sobbed as she said, “I'm begging them to give that dog back to that family. I just want the family to have their dog. It's not their fault. It's my fault.”

Today, her publicist said, “She was wrong by not reading the agreement. She thought she was doing a good thing.”

As for the death threats, the publicist added, “It's very upsetting to hear that someone is getting those kind of calls. Ellen just wants the dog reunited with the family."

However, "Extra" has learned that Iggy was placed in a new home today.

What do you think of the controversy? Go to Ellen's page on the Extra Wiki and sound off!

I am beginning to wonder if the lady at the shelter has something against gays. She and the shelter have been totally unreasonable. The whole point is to find pets good homes. I believe that was Ellen heartfelt objective. With all the unwanted and pets that are put to death because they can’t find a good home this is absolutely deplorable. Ad for New Orleans, I’m sure she did a lot of crying in private and outwardly has done as much as she can to help the situation there. There are some good people left in the United States.

Iggy should be returned to the children Ellen gave it to. NO ONE should be able to come into your home & remove your pet, unless they are being mistreated. My dog is my baby. She loves my grandchildren. Children need pets, & pets need children. The shelter let power go to their heads, & made a VERY BAD judgment. They should have their license taken away for causing so much pain.

What about the childrens’ feelings in all this? They too were traumatized by it. Taking Iggy away from them is as bad as taking a bed away from a child because they wet in it.People make mistakes, it’s called being human. For those of you making the death threats, you should be ashamed of yourselves.Instead of making threats, go out & help Iggy by rescuing a pet in honor of Iggy’s name.If you go to jail for threatening & have to pay a fine, court costs & a bondsman then that’s one less animal that will have a home because you spent your money on yourself instead of helping Iggy’s friends.I’m in no way in favor of what the shelter did, afterall, the goal is to find healthy homes for animals.Ellen wouldn’t just pass of an animal to anyone & hope it would be taken care of.She would give it to someone she “knew” would take care of it!Give Ellen a fine or something but don’t take Iggy out of a loving home, that’s cruel to Iggy & to the kids. How many people working at the shelter has pets & doesn’t let anyone under the age of 14 around them kids, grandkids, neices, nephews, ect?I say take their pet away “IMEDIATELY” if it’s being exposed to anyone under 14yrs old!!!I would say they were being ALOT hypocritical!Would the shelter owners take a pet away from one of their own family members who has kids under 14?,I think not!How can you look at yourself & smile knowing how much you’ve hurt that family, especially the kids? “I LOVE YOU IGGY, HOLLA!”

I think the woman at the shelter thing has an ego, power-controller, emontional problems to be in the type of business she’s in. She’s not holding up to her part of the contract yet calls the law if you make any changes on your side of the contract. I think if it was taken to court the little girl would get Ekkie back. Where the little dog belongs. The woman doesn’t care for the welfare of the dog just her own power-ego trip. The dog has already been in trama before Ellen rescued it now the woman just has tramatized the dog more. Is the woman jealous of Ekkie being so loved and cared for so she just jerked it out of the loving arms and home of the family who loved it so? She changes her rules as she chooses to suit her selfish cares. She should be closed down and turned into animal welfare authories. RETURN Ekkie to the little girl. Geez she obiviously doesn’t have a heart.

Although Ellen may have made a very unintentional mistake, the Shelet deliberatly mae a much bigger mistake. Is it not the objective of a shelter to place pets in loving and caring homes? Their “rule” for not placing pets with children is ridiculous, at best. How many children (myself included) had the privilege & joy of growing up with pets. I think the shelter should be evaluated for their ability to effectively place pets. This sounds like THEY anted the publicity, not Ellen. Shame on them for pretending to care about animals - Clearly that is not their concern or they would have interviewed the family Ellen gave the dog to - The whole situation is desperately wrong. Good Luck Ellen.

Wayne Pacelle Biography
In 2004 Wayne Pacelle was named president of the world’s richest animal-rights organization, the Humane Society of the United States (multi-million$ company where pacelle makes a 6 figure income). Pacelle, a strict vegan, joined HSUS in 1994 after working at the anti-hunting group the Fund for Animals for six years. There he helped Paul Watson and his violent Sea Shepherd Conservation Society raise money for ships. Pacelle’s goal is to create “a National Rifle Association of the animal rights movement.” He is in charge of HSUS’s many ballot initiative campaigns, winning 17 of the 22 in which he has been involved. His biggest win was in Florida, where an initiative passed that gave constitutional rights to pregnant pigs. Florida farmers were banned from using “gestation crates.” Many farmers killed their animals as a result and the pork industry in Florida is almost extinct. He plans campaigns against gestation crates in other states, and is already organizing in California and New Jersey. At the 1996 HSUS annual meeting, Pacelle announced that the ballot initiative would be used for all manner of legislation in the future, including “companion animal issues and laboratory animal issues.” These operations, he says, “pay dividends and serve as a training ground for activists.”

dear momkat & others, the HSUS is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. until recently, their published mission statement was to put an end to all pet ownership, comsumption of meat, use of animal parts, and any form of animal ownership. the website has been revised to make it more palatable to the public & to help w/ donations. HSUS had people on their “staff” who had criminal histories, i.e. were known felons, who had been convicted of distruction of private property. mink barns were burned to the ground along w/ the animals that live inside. the arsonists set the minks “free” but the minks were animals bred in captivity and returned to their nests to perish in the fire. those that remained “free” perished in the wild since they had no natural instincts to hunt, having been fed high protein food all their lives. some “humane” action, right? Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO, openly supported these actions then later denied the arsonists were on payroll, while payroll records proved otherwise.
also, the HSUS collect $25K for the rescue of katrina pets lost during the storm. June 1, 2006, JAVMA news:
Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti Jr. has opened an inquiry into allegations involving funds raised for reuniting pets and their owners by the Humane Society of the United States.
The attorney general announced in late March that it had asked the HSUS for an accounting of all funds the humane organization had raised for pet rescue and reunion with pet owners in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Numerous pet owners filed complaints with the attorney general about problems finding their pets, according to Foti’s office. Some owners claim that persons currently caring for their displaced pets are refusing to reunite the pet with the proper owners.
“Once again we will be on the lookout to make sure that those who seek to raise money for hurricane victims in our state, do exactly what they claim to do when soliciting funds,” Foti stated. “While I commend the work of the many wonderful charitable organizations that have come forward to help us in our time of need, I also want people to know that they cannot take advantage of our situation in any way.”
so momket, please rethink your fundraising for the HSUS and do some research.
JMHO
*note: the HSUS should not be confused w/ the SPCA.

I support the shelter. They should not be bullied. If it was any other person who adopted the pet, they wouldve done the same thing. Why play favorites to Degeneres because she’s famous? It may not make sense to people outside looking in, but the adoption process at most private organizations is complicated and seems ridiculous to us, but its in the best benefit of the pet…. At least in the organizations eyes.

I commit to my pets for life, so I don’t have to concern myself with the contracts, but these rescuers have a bit of a God-complex and they seem to have issues with control, and letting go.
Both sides made a mistake in judgment, but Bakti went too far and can’t seem to accept any responsibility for her part in it. She’s acting like a victim…and then getting upset at being victimized. You reap what you sow. She blew it….for a lot of other legitimate rescues.

I do think that the shelter has to be careful about their rules. If they allow this dog to remain with this family than everyone who decides to give one of these dogs away will have to be allowed to do so because Ellen was permitted to do so. Why can’t this shelter interview this family and decide whether they find them to be fit to keep the dog. If they go through the same process as anyone else than what’s the problem? The dog would be in a loving home with no rules broken or maybe this shelter feels it’s better to be right than to give this dog a good home and than the shelter should be questioned!!!!!

I’m not an Ellen fan nor am I a dog lover, so I can say I am neutral and not taking anyone’s “sides”. I think what it all boils down to is this dog have a loving home. Isn’t this the purpose of shelters, to find homeless animals loving homes? Ellen gave the dog to a loving home, end of story. The shelter should not have done what it did and should have been happy the dog wasn’t abandoned on the street or killed like many unwanted animals are. The dog had a loving home, it should have been left to stay there.

I have always wanted to open a non-kill shelter, but I would hate to think that I am the type of person who would play God on who is good enough to have a pet. I am really getting tired of this. Ellen should have handle it in private without the media and TV. She caused this problem. I do not blame the shelton because of what Ellen did without thinking she caused this agency to get threats and bad publicity. Ellen wanted attention and if she handle it in private it might have turned out different. Ellen insulted the agency and got all her fans to side with her. The people only had the dog for 3 weeks get over it and get another dog. Stop the winning and complaining. Ellen caused this problem plus how do we know that family is loving and caring it is only what Ellen said. All her fans do what ever she saids they are all brainwashed. Ellen is a big baby using the media to get what she wants. Grown up. It makes me sick to see what celebraties will do for publiciity. If anyone is to blame is Ellen she handled it very badly, in private it would have come out better. If Ellen loves animals so much she should have worked harder with her cats and keep the dog. What about all the other animals she ends up giving away because she is to lazy to work with them. Stop bragging about all the money you spend on the dog. You make me sick.

where or where were you?!
you don’t think she was the first person contacted when the storm was in progress do you? she wasn’t interviewed for days later. certainly enough time to compose herself.
