Jimmy Kimmel set tongues wagging this morning when he announced that Britney Spears would be performing at the American Music Awards.

"A lot of you seem preoccupied with whether or not Britney Spears will be on the show. I'm here to announce today that she will," said Jimmy as the nominations for the ceremony were read.

But "Extra" tracked down the comedian to set the record straight, and he laughed off his announcement.

"There have been rumors that Britney Spears is going to perform, but I started those rumors so there's no truth to them necessarily," he admitted.

The ceremony airs in November.
