Whoopi to Barry Manilow: 'If You Don't Sit With One, You Sit With None'

The women of “The View” are now addressing the controversy surrounding Barry Manilow’s refusal to appear next to Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Whoopi Goldberg began this morning’s show and explained that someone in Manilow’s camp had requested that he not sit next to Hasselbeck.

She then stated, “If you don’t sit with one, you sit with none,” to which the audience applauded.

All the women – Whoopi, Joy Behar, Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd – seemed to be in agreement that Manilow’s decision to cancel his appearance due to Hasselbeck’s conservative political views was a shame.

“We’ve had liberals, we’ve had Republicans – we service everybody!” joked Goldberg.

Added Behar, “We practice free speech here.”

Goldberg pointed out that the decision about Manilow’s appearance was ultimately left to executive producers Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie.

Hasselbeck insisted, “We are courageous women who sit here everyday and love each other through our differences – not despite them. I think that’s a wonderful thing.”

But all is not lost with Manilow: Goldberg said that at some point he will appear on the show.

Connie and Patty: It is sad that you have such strong opinions about someone who clearly has only done one thing wrong, NOT AGREE WITH YOU. Everyone else says exactly what they want to, and that is okay. As soon as a Republican opens there mouth, you don’t want the women of that show to have different views. I agree that the show can get out of control with the disagrements, but it’s each individual view. Elizabeth is a Mother and a Wife and a follower of Christ. She will always be under this kind of attack for standing up for traditional values. It is part of being a Christian in this “Politically Correct” world. But that is what makes this country so great. We all get a view. No Dictator tells us how to feel. I will keep you in my prayers, along with others that are so closed minded. Democrat or Republican, this country should be about loving one another in Christ. That is what we should all have urgently on our minds!! God bless in Christ’s perfect love!

I cannot believe how the View treats their guests. They could not agree to a simple request. AND then too call Barry Manilow a liar. I have watched the show before and they like to push their views down people’s throats. I will never watch the show again. I don’t like Rosie’s views, but You people are worst. I am a GOD fearing person and I believe in life. I’ve been a Barry Manilow fan since 1974 and he should have been treated better.

I don’t blame Barry….I wouldn’t want to sit next to that “wah, wah, wah” know it all either…She’s a chronic complainer..

To Connie and Patty, That’s EXACTLY what liberals do each and every day, whether or not they’ve been asked - it just stands out more when a conservative does it, because they don’t need the whole world to agree w/ them, and usually keep their opinions as their own. Too bad, you have to hear another ‘view’ once in awhile, huh?

I saw Barry Manilow once in 1974. I only went because he had produced Bette Midler so I thought he might have talent.
What a schmaltzer. His talent is as unnoticeable as his chin. It’s no surprise he’s a liberal.

I think that Barry was visiting the “VIEW” to promote his new CD. The talk should not be about poiltics. Period. We all know Ms.Hassleback has a tendency to run her mouth and to tell you the truth its not a matter of who is a “Barry fan or a “Hassleback” fan, the man has a right to speek as she does. He has is beliefs and she has hers. Let them work it out. Its not our buisness. And yes I did buy the new CD and will buy everyone thereafter!

My first thought about Barry Manilow was “What a wimp…petite, little Elizabeth????” What is he afraid of???” At first, I thought I didn’t want to buy his albums any more, but that would be reacting out of my emotions and “flesh” …not my spirit. I desire (it ain’t always easy, but certainly worth it!) to live through the spirit of Jesus Christ (and, no, NOT the religious folks who hide behind their walls made with “man’s hands.”) I cannot judge him, nor would I NOT buy his albums. I am just disappointed, and saddened, that he does not live in true Freedom of what God designed me to do…share and witness with one another in our beliefs. Then, trust in the being God made in me, and the Truth will come forward. I may just learn from someone else (whom God may have put in my path), and, through them, God will direct me to the Truth. Beware of Pride, Barry Manilow.

The last time I checked we still live in a “free” country. Barry’s decision not to appear on The View for whatever reason is his choice.

I am so tired of actors speaking outloud about there political views. We do not pay to see them for there political views. When will this stop. They must have pretty big egos to think they are more than just an entertainer.

I have been a devoted Manilow fan since 1973, yet even I was caught off-guard at his attiude regarding appearing on the View with Ms Hasselbeck. Even though I am pro-life and a Bush supporter, I would have absolutely no qualms about others having differing opinions about the aforementioned subjects; I am sorry that Barry does not feel the same. Unless he corrects his “tunnel vision,” his popularity may sink to an all-new low, never to recover.

This is America. We should be able to get along with people, even if they don’t agree with our political views. Elizabeth has more class in her little finger then many of the people that bash her! She does not act disrespectful to people who do not agree with her, she just says how she feels. I applaud her trying to represent another side of things, even when she knows it may not be the “popular” way to be. She is true to herself. The View is about different women, with different “views”.

I love Barry Manilow and this is the USA isn’t it? We are entitled to free speech - if he felt that this show wasn’t for him with her on it that is his business. I am disappointed with his loyalty to Rosie but then again - it’s a free country!!

I congratulate Mr Manilow at least he can stand up for what he believes. Ms. Hassleback has an hour everyday to promote or push her beliefs on people. The guests have just 1 segment to promote themselves, thier book, music, movie etc…that is if they can get a word in during all the conversations going on around them. It seems she can promote her beliefs but why is it that anyone who refuses to go along with her is wrong? Get rid of Rosie, Barry is no good…..why? Because they stood up to Ms Hassleback? Who is she anyway???? Why is her opinion the only one that counts??

I am huge Barry Manilow fan and have all his albums and CD’s. I have never been much of a View fan. I find the View to be too much of game playing. However, I am discussed and disappointed with Barry Manilows behavior and will never buy another one of his CD’s again.

Barry is a washed up singer from the 70’s and 80’s who needs some publicity to boost his ego and make a few bucks ( he also released a CD a week ago I believe) The View is that a view Elizabeth has a right to her option or political views just as anyone does. She has more common sense than most people on television today. I use to be a big fan of Barry in the 70’s-90 then he disappeared from the spot light now he is trying to make a comeback but its too late retire and move to Flordia.

Barry Manilow has proven himself to be (yet again) a wimp.

Refusing to sit next to someone simply because you have differing views is disrespectful. We are a nation of many people with many points of view. What’s the matter Barry? Did she marry your dream man? Sitting next to her would be a very open minded thing to do.
