Robin Roberts: I Have Found Purpose in My Cancer Battle

“Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts has found purpose in her cancer battle.

“Extra” was with the brave and beloved newswoman for her emotional homecoming to her hometown of Pass Christian, Mississippi, less than a month after announcing she had breast cancer and just weeks after emergency surgery.

“I never for one minute asked, ‘Why did this happen to me?’ But rather, ‘Why did this happen for me?” she said.

Now the brave star is taking on two battles: one to raise awareness for early cancer detection, and the other to help rebuild the devastated Gulf Coast.

In Pass Christian, Robin was saddened to see that the town in which she grew up is still struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina, two years after the disaster.

Now she has a new mission: help rebuild Mississippi.

“How good are things? Well, ask those people that are still living in FEMA trailers two years later. They’ll say not good,” she said.

She continued, “I was at an elementary school not far from here, and they don’t have any indoor plumbing…there’s a cry here: let’s get the job done.”

The two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina happened to fall on the same day as a breast cancer luncheon. Strangely, Robin had scheduled to attend the event long before she discovered a cancerous growth in her body.

“I accepted the invitation, then I get the diagnosis, and I look up [to God] and go, ‘Did you know something I didn’t know?”

In fact, that heartbreaking moment when she first found out she had breast cancer was literally hard to believe.

“The doctor says ‘cancer,’ and then he says something else, but you don’t hear it,” she explained. “You just hear the word cancer, and you’re just reeling…it’s been an absolute roller coaster for me. But I’m not alone.”

Robin has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support she’s getting. Since her cancer announcement, she received a tremendous 40,000 emails.

“You have no idea how that makes you feel, that people are thinking and praying for you,” she said.

Robin has always been spiritual, but now the healing both in her hometown – and within herself – has heightened her sense of purpose.

“I know that part of the reason was for me to get the message out about early detection. It’s going to save my life,” she said. “So the amount of pain I have to go through, it’s miniscule compared to what it can hopefully save other people.”

Do you want to leave Robin a message of support? Post it here.

Robin, I so admire you. I, too, have been diagnosed with breast cancer but am now cancer free. I had surgery 2-20-09 and had a bilateral mastectomy. No chemo or radiation, just (THANK GOD!) the hormonal treatment, one tablet every day for 5 years. No family history so my family was absolutely devastated. I’m still reeling but God and everyone’s love and support got me through it. God bless you!

Robin, To God Be the Glory! I am so glad to have heard you speak at womens empowerment about 2 or 3 years ago. I knew then that your faith was strong. Hold on to your faith, and know, theres nothing too hard for God. Keep the FAITH.

Robin,

I want to thank you for sharing how you have dealt with the cancer diagnosis and treatment. As I read the stories about you and watch the videos, it gives me the courage to face my own breast surgery one week from today. Thanks for reminding me that I am not in this alone and that my faith, my family and my friends are here to see me through it.

I just wanted to say you are blessed and God do things for a reason we are just like the seasons winter, spring, summer, fall its like this winter we are just getting into things getting things out of life.spring we are growing developing emotional and spiritual then when summer comes we are too busy planning things out instead of living them day by day in other words getting caught up having fun then we fall like the leaves in the trees trying to fall just right knowingwe will be down on our knee wondering will most of this happen to me and if so how will i act and what can i learn from it. You don’t know how a person feel unless you have been down a path simular to them or on the same road it happened to you because God needed you to help mend spirits and in order for you as a person to help you had to be strong and help yourself first meaning be strong God bless you

Dear Robin:
Surely, goodnes and mercy shall follow you all of the days of your life. My grand-mother died of breast cancer many many years ago. My mother is a BC survivor, however God has given favors after favors thru that trial and she very positive about it. According to medical research this puts me in a high risk concern, however I beleive that God is granting favors and blessings regarding myself, see I live in Florida with no health coverage whatsoEVER. I found my purpose in life when I went to West Africa “Ghana” as a missionary worker, my life has been changed for better, my goal, my heart is to continue helping and sharing the good news about Christ’s Return and also share my testamony about how God healed my mom and how God is able to heal me in every way. I am praying for you and also encourage you to BELIEVE that God is giving you a message to share in your situation, He alone is ableto give you LEMONADE out of your lemon, focus on your calling and please let me know of any organization that can support, people like me with NO health insurance to be able to get help. Meanwhile take great care of yourself. Truly AMERICA need to provide better health coverage for fellow Americans, if I get health Coverage I won’t be able to provide for my two sons that need me to keep a roof over their heads and to feed them. It is very hard for folks like me and I am sure that there are many many more others like me. Remain richly bless and highly favored by the Almighty in this battle of breast cancer.

God bless,
Cartine

Robin, I admire your tenacity and openness with the public regarding your diagnosis and subsequent treatment. I am a mother of seven, an Iraqi War veteran, active duty Navy Corpsman, and I hope to add Breast Cancer survivor to my resume’. It has been a harsh two years for me and my family but I returned from Iraq in one physical piece (mental is another story!), got back on my feet with my family, and BAM! slammed with a breast cancer diagnosis. No problem, I cruised through chemotherapy and last week I completed the “Honors” Radiation treatment. Now, it is a waiting game until my scans are repeated! Thank you for your continued support and recovery!

Robin,
I have been keeping up with your progress in your cancer treatment. I am a mother of seven children, an Iraqi War veteran, active duty Navy, and soon to be breast cancer survivor! It has been a tough two years for me and my family, but that is what it is all about, the family bond. I have completed chemotherapy in June and just graduated from the “Radiation Renegades” last week! Now, I just wait and hope the upcoming scans prove I am a survivor!

Dear Robin,
You are such an inspiration to all. I had breast cancer 13 years ago and had a lumpectomy, chemo, and radiation. I am cancer free and know how you feel, but you have alot of faith and that will get you through along with all the prayers for you. I have helped others who have gone through similar situations and it helps to talk to someone who has gone through the same thing. Keep smiling and God is looking down on you.

I can only hope Robin will see my message…

Dearest Robin,
I cannot begin to tell you how much I admire and respect you. And not because you are a woman of color who has made such an amazing place for herself in the world of journalism (which does not go unnoticed) but more because you are a human of incredible heart and conviction. I was never more touched than when I watched you visit your hometown after Katrina…I cried with you. I have watched you with total admiration since you first sat on the news desk and I thought to myself, “one day this gal is going to be hosting GMA!” I was overjoyed the day it was announced you would take the spot I always knew you deserved.

I want you to know that you are in my heart and in my and my family’s prayers. I know you’re going to fight the good fight…you have too much to give the world and your job isn’t over :) My stepmother is a 20-year breast cancer survivor and she attributes it to a positive attitude, “visualization” (she said she pictured the chemo meds as little bombs attacking the cancer cells) and just knowing she had too much to live for. I can see you approaching your challenge the same way…adding in your incredible spiratuality, which I’ve always admired, and I’ve respected how comfortable you were in sharing it with your audience.

You are an inspiration and a warm heart to which I awake every weekday. Thank you for being the amazing person you are and God Bless You.

I just want you to know I felt your pain when you announce that you had breast cancer. It was like I was getting the news again from my doctor. I was diagnose in Oct. 2005, had my surgery in Nov. and Dec. of 2005. I started chemo at the end of Dec. and finish in April. After having 8 treatment of chemo I had to start 6 1/2 weeks of radation. Through all of that I made it. I had GOD on my side. With GOD and prayers you will make it also. To every woman out age does not matter. So please get check out if you feel something is wrong. I was 36 years old when I found out and was in the third stage of may breast cancer. I am doing just fine and I thank GOD for my storm because he open up my eyes to life. Keep the faith…. Rhonda

After hearing of your illness, I just felt the urge to write this note to tell you that you are a “Blessed Woman”. My mom was diagnosed w/breast cancer snd my cousin is just finishing w/her treatment. Therefore, whenever I hear of someone w/a breast cancer diagnosis it always hits close to home no matter who it is. I feel that you are a God fearing woman and know where your strength comes from. Keep close to Him & He will travel this road w/you. God Bless
