Brad Pitt on Hurricane Katrina: 'It Was a Man-Made Disaster'

“Extra” has learned that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are hitting the Hamptons by helicopter this weekend for a cause that hits close to home: the devastation of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

The superstar couple has a house in the French Quarter of the Big Easy, and Brad is on a mission to rebuild the city.

He told the “Today” show, “It’s about fairness. It’s about dignity.”

Us Weekly broke the news that Brad and Angie are hosting an ultra-exclusive Hamptons dinner party for about 50 people Saturday night, hoping to raise money for the victims of Katrina.

Meanwhile, Brad is fighting mad about the region’s slow recovery from the devastating hurricane, and he’s raising his voice.

He told “Today,” “Katrina was a man-made disaster. The misconception is that it was nature, but this was man-made. Decades and decades of bad, irresponsible moves that I believe the government has a responsibility to make right.”

Together, Brad and Angie are celebrating the progress of an organization called Global Green, which aims to build eco-friendly homes in New Orleans.

Brad shared his passion for the project in an exclusive “Today” show interview, which continues tomorrow, saying, “We're not going to be able to bring back the families and friends that we lost, but maybe we could provide a better way of life."

Anonymous, I can guarantee you that the liberal business owners and the liberal insurance executives that you wrote about are all conservative republicans.

I couild not live in my home after the fire. The fire probably would not have happened if we were able to clear out the dead trees.Environmental groups prevented this. Our LOCAL government should have handled this.We pay alot on insurance and it’s very difficult to get these companies to pay out.If people would stop suing it would help alot.We worked hard to rebuild and family, friends and religious groups helped us.I also feel the government is giving too much money away and charity begins at home. That’s why I get upset when people adopt from other countries when there are plenty of children here to adopt or when they build schools in other countries when we need to better our education here.Alot of our money is wasted on programs initiated by local politicians. The Presidents job is to make sure the country as a WHOLE is taken care of.

I am sorry your home got damaged due to wild fire.

But at least you have a home to go to. Most of the residents in New Orleans have no home!! Their homes are washed out.
Don’t forget that the levees broke!!! If the government took care of the levees. Then half of the people affected by katrina would still have there homes and still be ALIVE today!

I don’t understand you comment about handouts! So its o.k. if the government sends billions of dollars to foreign countries for aid (Isn’t that considered a handout???) and forget about the US citizens living in the United States.

They are alot of people out there who are taking care of themselves and others but that still needs help.

Have any of you ever stopped and wondered how the wealthy get so wealthy? Look into it. You’ll find that they get “WELFARE,” only they have another name for it.
To those who think government isn’t here to help those who can’t help themselves then why are they here? Congressman and Senators are allowed to become wealthy while they are in office and I don’t hear anyone raising their voices in protest. They have the best health care in the country and guess who’s paying for it? Not them!! bush has become richer while he has been in office and guess who’s footing the bill for that? YUP the good citizens of the US who stay silent while the rich get richer and the poor drown in New Orleans and then begrudge the survivors asking for help.
I stand up and cheer that there are people like Brad Pitt in this world who are trying to make a difference. As for you who can’t find anything good to say about him get off your rear ends and head to New Orleans and do something.

My dear Marg and Ligaya—-NOTHING was said about them bad mouthing anyone ut if they are so patriotic help the ones at home first.Things were in place for the people of New Orleans but the local government was not competent enough to use what was there for them.People need to be intelligent enough to stop sitting around placing blame and start doing. My home had major damage during a wild fire.I did not expect the government to take care of it for me.We pay insurance for these types of misfortunes but the liberal business owners and very liberal insurance executives take your money and tell you to ask the government.

If people with money doesn’t help rebuild New Orleans who else will???? The same government that waited TOOO long to help rescue people before it was too late.

I don’t care about the local government being responsible for their residents. I think the government of the United States of America should be (starting with the White House) needs to take responsiblity of their citizens. New Orleans is not a third world country and the residents are not REFUGEES. They are United States Citizens.

Anonymnous (8/22/07), I’m not understanding you. You’re not making sense to me. I’ve never heard in an interview or seen in print anything by Brad or Angelina badmouthing the US. Would you please come up with a quote by Brad & by Angelina (each) that does that? Please give your source & date, and please use respectable, reliable media with journalistic standards (People, Time, Newsweek, Readers Digest, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Elle, Glamour/Allure, Cosmopolitan; NPR, NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, AP, Reuters etc.). If the source is a tabloid magazine/newspaper or blog - it’s worthless.

i can’t believe you ignorant people, talking bad about them. they don’t have to do what they do. they chose to help people. that is why the world hates americans. instead of aknowndging what they do, you critize it . i bet that you idiots are part of that survey that came out this week (1 of 4 americans that did not read a single book) anyone who critizes someone for helping another, is the most selfish, and rude individauls alive.

Brad is helping to make a playground for the rich. Eco-friendly homes cost a small fortune. I guess when you have all that money you become way out of touch with realty. KEEP HOLLYWOOD OUT OF NEW ORLEANS! THEY REALLY DON’T HAVE A CLUE!

The government he’s talking about is the local and state government. They are the ones who are supposed to take care of things. Why are all of these so called stars and humanitarians so quick to place the blame.Could it be guilt?

Since when was it the governments responsility to give handouts to everyone.People need to start helping themselves and others.Alot of donations were sent and alot of time was given to help these people.MAYBE THE LITTLE HOLLYWOOD GROUP SHOULD START GIVING BACK SOME OF THE MONEY THEY’RE TAKING FROM US.

At least he is making an effort to help the people in New Orleans. I don’t see the Government stepping in and helping these people. He is not badmouthing the gorvernment he is merely stating a FACT!!!!!!

The bridge in Minneapolis will be build back in a year. Hurricane Katrina happened 2 years ago and still there is no effort made to rebuild New Orleans.

What a SHAME!!!

Instead of spending all their money on foreign countries and badmouthing the US why don’t they either move over there and stay out of our country or spend all that money here helping the poor that they are blaming the government for. Funny that’s why they say they are giving their money to the 3rd world countries. HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!!!
