Tammy Faye's Closest Friends Reveal Her Final Hours

Tammy Faye Messner may have passed away, but her legend lives on.

Already, her website has been turned into a memorial page as people from across the world leave messages of sadness and joy, remembering the woman whose bright spirit could not be dimmed by cancer.

Her son Jay posted this message about his mother in her final hours: "She had a peaceful death and is no longer in pain."

Tammy passed away after battling cancer for more than a decade.

But mortality was no surprise to the faithful Christian evangelist, who said on "Larry King Live" that she knew exactly where she was going.

"I believe when I leave this earth, I'm going straight to heaven," Tammy told King.

Just 48 hours later, her last words came true. She passed away peacefully with her husband Roe by her side.

Tammy's former husband, televangelist Jim Bakker, is now speaking out. He posted a tribute on a webcast saying, "She lived life liked the song she sang. If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade."

Rapper Vanilla Ice, who co-stared with Tammy on "The Surreal Life," is revealing exclusively to "Extra" his poignant tale about his frantic attempt to reach her after seeing her saddening appearance on "Larry King."

"I got a hold of her manager," recalls the rapper. But he was never able to see his friend before she died.

"I'm shocked," he said. "I was going to see her, and I didn't even get a chance for that."

But he said Tammy's legacy will never be forgotten.

"The world needs more people like her," he insisted. "A total sweetheart. She's going to be missed."

He adds, "When you’re looking at death, and you can be that strong – that’s something to admire.”

Today, "Extra" learned that Tammy's family might be making an appearance on television. If Jim Bakker or any of their children decide to talk publicly, it will reportedly be to Larry King.

"Extra" wants to know: what will you remember most about Tammy Faye? Post your comments here.

I remember watching Tammy on the Surreal Life and thinking what a special person she was. Most of us in life have things that we are not proud of. To error is human and to forgive is divine. May we remember to treat all people with kindness and tolerence and perhaps life with be a little bit better for our children.

Tammy Faye is beautiful example to women eveywhere to be ourself and don’t let people try to fit us into a mold. She taught us to make choices that are bold and courageous. Hooray for a life worth watching.

Tammy is a child of God. All those who are condeming her must remember that all have sinned and fallen short. Whether you slander someone or kill someone, in Gods eyes its the same sin. Only God knows your true heart. I’m glad He is the one that will be judging us and not man. Tammy always said that she loved the Lord, and if she accepted the Lord in her heart and repented for her sins, then she is in heaven with our heavenly father. Rest in peace Tammy and enjoy eternity with Jesus.

My husband & I worked at PTL in the ’80s and it was a wonderful time in our lives. So many positive things happened there that never made the airwaves. I didn’t know them well personally, but I would like to make a few comments. Tammy was a giver and often gave away personal clothing to others, sometimes with the tags still on them. She was just that kind of person. She didn’t have anything to do with PTL’s finances. She & Jim received salaries there like anyone else. They did raise $ for television, trying to get the gospel out around the world…and it did reach many nations around the world. Jim & Tammy certainly made their share of mistakes, but they were also the kind of folks who would own up to them. A lot of what was criticized in the press was never explained correctly. Tammy Faye was a classy lady, and I am proud of her for speaking out one last time & giving her testimony. She faced death the same way she faced life - with faith & courage. My thoughts & prayers go out to Sue & Jamie & her other loved ones.

Tammy took the faith of millions and used it to scam them of their money. She then had the audacity to claim that she knew nothing of the scam. She begged the poor for money to fund her lavish lifestyle. The media should cover the lives of the people she scammed out of their money and not celebrate Tammy Faye.

May God rest her soul, but the praise for Tammy Faye demonstrates how short term our memories are!!!!

I cant say Ive been a big fan over the years and I dont know how much she really even knew about the entire financial scandal. I do know that when I saw her on LKL I was moved to tears. Her bravery and even humor while standing at deaths door was inspiring. Not many people have that rock solid of a faith to know in their very last moments of life where they will be going when they leave this earth. For her to be brave enough to go on TV as sick as she was and as we now know..closer to death than anyone realized, is beyond admirable.
And SHAME on Barbara Walters for saying something to the effect of was it smart for her to go on TV with how bad she looked. Tammy had more grace and dignity in dying than apparently Barbara has in living.

this is to all the people who has ill hearted feelings about Tammy. while i don’t know or claim to know all the goings ons of the days of Jim and Tammy fay. i do know about forgiveness. we all are human and are capable of true love and true hate. and to hold on to what a person had done a long time ago will never make it right. if a person is wronged by another—especially when it’s the elderly or young or sick. it’s a horrid thing. but when we hold on to that hate, well that makes us no better than the ill hearted. in addition, we will all face our Lord in the end and we can tell him why or why not of all the things we did on earth. and for me, well hating is not one that i want to have to admit to my Lord God and Almighty. Tammy, REST IN PEACE AND MAY THE SUN OF HEALING MAKE YOU WHOLE AGAIN AND YOUR GIFTS OF LOVE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD SHINE ONTO EACH AND EVERY SOUL WHO HURTS AND IS ANGUISHED BY THE PAST. AND IN TIME MAY ALL THE HURTS BE MADE INTO WARM SMILES.

When I learned of Tammy Faye’s death, I just prayed to God that he let her have her make-up up in Heaven… I know some people think she wore too much, but this was her thing. I started watching PTL Club along time ago. I love to watch her and Jim walking down the steps greeting the audience as they walked. She loved the Lord and she made me feel so loved. I am not sure about all the legal stuff about PTL, but this show and the people on it made me feel so good when I watched it. I love the Lord and I know she did too. God bless her family and friends. I just lost one of my closest friends. I know how hard it is to lose some one close, but just remember, we will see them again in Heaven and I can’t wait. God Bless us All Betty

my deepest sympathy goes out to her husband and children as well as her closest friends. may God’s love and compassion shed rays of warmth onto the family and friends who fought so very hard with Tammy to overcome her greatest fight—cancer. even though people may view this as sad. our souls live on and that is who Tammy is. Not the sick ridden flesh left behind. and one day, we will all be reunited again and whole and complete. Tammy, may you be at rest and tranquility and your gifts of compassion spread amongst us all. God bless the family and friends. slh.

When I was going through the worst of my depression I would watch the PTL Club and Tammy Faye’s positive, upbeat attitude brought a glint of light into my day. She taught me how to face my own difficulties. I also have a fudge recipe she gave on air those many years ago. Every Christmas, since then, I make this fudge for family, friends and others. People love it.
Thank you Tammy!

In comment to the others that slander that suffering woman- why do you think she wore all that makeup? Her husband probably had lust in his heart from the get-go. She didn’t wear that hearvy makeup early on, was always such a sweet woman!

How timely that she went to rehab for prescription drugs about the same time…Drug addicts usually feel powerless to change their circumstances, that’s why they self-medicate to numb their emotions… I think Bad Bakker has to worry about what goes around, comes around. Point the accusation at him! I don’t think Tammy Faye knew anything about the financial problems until it was too late. I feel that in my heart! May God show you what really went down…in Jesus’Name and May God Rest Your worried Heart, Tammy Faye!

I know it is unkind to speak badly about the deceased, however this woman was a clown and a charlaton who bilked innocent people, including my father out of well-earned money. I don’t see any quality about her that should be admired. She was a completely phony from her professed love of the Lord to her hideous make-up. It is a sad commentary about the cult of personality in this country that people are pouring out sympathy for this woman.

I have been in tears the world has lost an angel to the Lord. I have loved her over the years, her spirit and love of our Lord has kept me going. I had to quit my job and I now spend time in bed from pain I was giving up on life then seeing how she was fighting to go on brought me to my knees in prayer. The world has lost a a wonderful lady. I wish i could have met her in person. I guess I will have to wait awhile to do that. Even in her last interview she ministered to me in so many ways.
I looked to the heavens last night and saw a star so brite I believe that was Tammy smiling down with happiness as she is now with our Lord.
May God bless her wonderful husband and keep him strong I will keep him in my prayers. Tammy Faye Baker Messner was a strong woman! She always gave God praise. She will be truly missed. My prayers are with her husband, children and her family.
Thank you Tammy for being part of my life.

See you in Heaven,
Kathay

You are Home…
