Kelly Clarkson to Clive Davis: 'I Get You Don't Like My Album'

“Extra” has the furious first words from “American Idol” star and Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson about her simmering feud with record mogul and icon Clive Davis.

Kelly reputedly blew off Clive advice for her new CD titled "My December" --- and wrote all the songs herself.

Now, her summer tour is cancelled and Kelly is blasting Clive in the new issue of Blender magazine, saying she told the BMG/RCA honcho, “I get (that) you don’t like my album. You’re 80; you’re not supposed to like my album.”

But if Kelly is concerned, she didn’t show it when we spotted her at a trendy LA restaurant yesterday, where we collided with Paris Hilton.

My own opinion.. no matter who you are..no matter where you are..be humble, sincere and respectful. Don’t think you’re on top of everything..or else people around you will think you have changed coz of the success you’re having right now..and It’s not going to help your career if you act that way. don’t you think so?

Kelly is a true talent, regardless of the stuggle between her and the record label execs…she will be around a long long time! I think she is classy and a great inspiration.

Ian - The venues Velvet Revolver played before their album came out were clubs and not 20,000 seat arenas. Kindly get your facts straight and compare apples to apples. This is a classic case of the record companies not getting behind an artist to flex their muscles. Art and business don’t mix and this is just another example. the record companies play games all the time and in this case, it’s Clive playing games with an artist he always mocks in private life and in meetings.

I am also 53 and have been a big fan of KC, loved the breakaway album. I don’ yet have the new CD.
I do think Clive is out of touch but he does conrol the airwaves. Its too bad for KC.
She is really in the drivers seat, has enough money for a lifetime but for her, I’m sure its not about the Money.
Hope she gets her tour going again, the FANS will but he CD and go to the tours no matter what Clive thinks.

With all due respect to Mr. Davis, he doesn’t want Kelly writing her own songs because he’s all about not letting artists write so the artists don’t get publishing money…look at Whitney Houston’s career…she’s had so many #1 hits and he never encouraged her to write a single song or produce anything…he’s made sooo much money off of her . However, Whitney has far less money than kids half her age that write and produce some of their tracks like Avril, Beyonce, etc. Clive is too busy running around on his wife and squiring his lady-friends around to know what good music is anymore… he shouldn’t even pretend that he’s got an ear anymore…

The point is that Clive Davis doesn’t have to like her music, cause he ain’t the one buying her CDs, we are. And if we keep buying her CDs then he has no choice but to “like” it. How else will an artist grow if they do not write their own material? I think Kelly at this point has earned that right no matter what Clive seems to think. She is an artist after all, not a commodity, and as long as Clive remembers that, then he should have no problem with Kelly’s new CD. And cancelling a concert tour because your music heads are too old to appreciate good material is stupid. It’s too much pressure - not being allowed to not be perfect. That’s just plain stupid. And then Simon has to get his two cents in - like, when did either one of them sing a decent tune? If they had to sing for their supper, they’d both end up eating each other!

People keep mentioning “Kelly’s ego,” and I would like to just take the time to remind them that Davis and her other execs were COMPLETELY against her 2nd album “Breakaway” when it first came out. Clive told her that her only hit from the album would be “Since You’ve Been Gone” and no others…I think she had a few others. Also, Davis and his team were set on making Kelly sing “Never Again” on Idol Gives Back - to which Kelly refused saying there was no crass in doing that…So who has the ego problem? Clive Davis.
The fact that “My December” is being viewed as a failure because its not spawning radio response is ridiculous. The first week of sales sold more than “Breakaway” and she’s only had one single hit complete mainstream with “Sober” right behind it. She’ll be fine, and her career will continue (especially with Reba).

Kelly’s career over? Hardly. She’s one to two weeks away from going gold,(Fantasia hasn’t gone gold with HER CD) she just had a top 3 to top 5 single (depending on the chart),and her duet with Reba is about to hit the top 10.
Even IF this excellent CD doesn’t do as well in the USA, she is the only Idol to have international success, and sells well in other Countries. And, her
next CD may be a country CD,which will sell well. It’s obvious,at least to me - that she fired her manager because they booked her into larger venues than they should have at the time.
Kelly has enough money to last her a lifetime, even if she rarely performs.
She will always have fans. And, there are other hits on this CD!

Kelly, I am also 53 years young, and I think your new CD is some of your best work. You really show your versitility, and a lot of moxie. Even my son, who really doesn’t follow Kelly’s songs, says he really likes the “mad Kelly”.

Rock on girl!

I don’t think fame has got to her head at all. In fact, she’s still the same as ever. Like she said, she’s had to struggle on ALL her albums to get what she wanted. The difference about the others and this one is that My December’s feud went public, which was very unprofessional on both ends. She even said it that she could give a crap about being famous or anything. The problem is, she’s bound by contract with the label so therefore, she can’t leave it.

so the lame argument now is that because the album wasn’t released, that it had a direct impact on tour sales? Huh?

I just saw Velvet Revolver before the new album came out. They sold out every where they played. So, because I didn’t know the new songs, they should cancel the show?

One reason for sluggish show sales — Her career is over. No one cares any more. She’s a great talent, always will be. But it’s over for her.

I agree with both Kelly and Clive. Kelly’s musical direction wasn’t broken, so I don’t see why she had to fix it. I understand that she wanted to contribute more of her own material and have creative control, but you have to strike a balance between expressing your feelings in a song and putting out a song that people will want to listen to. “Never Again”, as well as the first three cuts on the album, are all screaming and headbanging. These songs have no melody whatsoever; it’s like Kelly wanted to use primal scream therapy to let her anger out. A singer with an amazing voice like Kelly’s should not only use it in ways that flatter it, she should also take care of it, because if she keeps singing like this, she is going to burn herself out. Other songs on the CD are wonderful, such as “Irvine”, “Give Me a Kiss”, and the hidden track “Chivas”. These songs not only have great melodies, they showcase Kelly’s voice the way it deserves to be. “Breakaway” was a major success; she should have continued in that direction on her new album.

Her ticket sales were slow because her album release date was pushed back several months (by Clive Davis) AFTER tour dates were already established. Who wants to buy tickets to a concert where you won’t know any of the material? This is why the tour has been POSTPONED; so people have a chance to get acquainted with the material. Of course, the rescheduled tour will be done in smaller venues, since she’s practically being “Dixie Chicked” and not getting the radio exposure she deserves. It amazes me how willing people are to buy into the manufactured hype designed to taint Kelly’s image and ultimately make her “fail,” whatever that means.

yep, we all know how well people from Texas turn out.

Clarkson did an amazing job with Idol, but this ego has to go. what other label will pick her up now that she’s trashed Clive Davis, and has a tough time with ticket sales? Clarkson’s career was nice while it lasted.

Look people. Don’t Mess With a Texas Girl! Kelly has one of the most powerful voices in music today. Like someon said , “She can sing Any Genre’ of Music”. LET HER! It is her choice, her voice, her future. It is just like Any other ARTIST. Did Shakespear let someone tell him to write a different Play? Did George Lucas let someone tell him to write a different script? An artist will have a good, song, a good book, or a good movie, and they WILL have a bad one as well. But if you let people TELL you what to do, you will never LEARN. Let Kelly LEARN Clive, just as YOU have learned who to sign on and who not to. YOU HAVE MADE MISTAKES TOO. Kelly you sing Rock, Pop, Country whatever YOUR artistic mind tells you to do. People will ALWAYS LOVE YOU no matter what. Just keep it “REAL”, stay true to yourself and stay a TEXAN at Heart. You are my Hero. PS. Do a duet with Shania Twain next!!! Love Ya and Love “My December”! Sam

Clive has been wrong many many times before… the last duets he forced onto
legendary Carlos Santana flopped badly,
and Whitney’s foray into hip hop was a joke.

Kelly has musical vision, and Clive has no business dissing her publicly. he acts like a spoiled brat.
Kelly’s CD rocks ( and I’m 53! )The first 3 songs get you going, and then you
get a breather with “Sober”,which is better in longer format. I’ve always loved the fact that Kelly can sing ANYTHING, and Clive wants her to sing bubblegum. This CD proves that she CAN sing anything!

You can’t be a sweet down to earth person in the business world. Kelly brought in a lot of money for Clive and others. They need to show her some RESPECT and give her a chance to succeed or fail on this new album. Good Luck Kelly!!!

Kelly’s big problem is that Clive rules the airwaves. The album is great. I bought one the first day it came out and yesterday a second for my office. She is still the same sweet generous girl she was…if she wasn’t she would have taken the extra $$$’s and put the “pop” songs on her album. You go girl…CAN’T wait to see what she and Reba will cook up they make a great team.

In my opinion, RCA record executive Clive Davis shouldn’t fight Kelly Clarkson’s artistic vision or the selected songs for her third CD “My December.” Release the album to the American public and let consumers decide whether they like it or not. That’s the right thing to do. I’ve listened to “My December” several times. Miss Clarkson shows “real maturity and moxie” as a singer/songwriter. She’s lovely and loquacious! Keep it real, Kelly! God bless you! Peace.

I used to L-O-V-E Kelly Clarkson, but now I am so disapointed. I think the fame finally got to her and she is not that sweet, down to earth girl she once was. (which was part of her charm)
