Isaiah Washington on Being Fired: 'I'm Not Angry. I'm Disappointed'

Isaiah Washington speaks out, on camera for the first time, about the scandal that rocked primetime TV and cost him his job on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“You really have to focus on tomorrow,” says Isaiah, who is trying to move on from the gay-slur firestorm that finally led to his firing.

“Life goes on. Life is good,” he says.

Isaiah adds, “I’m not angry. I’m not upset. I’m disappointed that the outcome came out the way it is.”

Life does go on for Isaiah, whose character Dr. Preston Burke left the show without any hints for the future.

Right now, Isaiah is hard at work on a new project, playing a priest in the upcoming “The Least of These,” and he’s taking the time to say goodbye to his former castmates.

“It’s good work,” says Isaiah. “It’s good material, and that’s how it was on ‘Grey’s.’ And I wish them well.”

And Isaiah’s former co-stars are wishing him well, too.

“Grey’s” star Kate Walsh opened up to “Extra,” saying, “It’s a surprise, and I’m saddened by it. You know, he’s a great actor.”

Sara Ramirez is just as shocked about his sudden departure, which led Isaiah to say, “I am mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more.”

Sara says, “I don't really know what to say except that I wish him the best. I really do, from the bottom of my heart I wish him the best.”

Adds Isaiah, “I’m grateful and I’m blessed.”

I watched Larry King last night and I believed Isaiah Washington’s side of the story. I hope Patrick Dempsey comes forward with the truth. Grey’s will never be the same for me and I won’t be watching without Dr. Burke at the hospital. I like Sandra Oh a lot, too. I wish someone would write a show just for the two of them. They are both great actors and classy.

I will not watch Grey’s ever again. The writing on this show has deteriorated and become very predictable. Also I do not feel like I “know” the characters any more. Who are these people? The love triangles have become rediculous! Finally, IW is on e of the best actor’s on TV and his character was one of the best on the show. Why fire him for one mistake? I am tired of TV exec’s pandering to the “politically correct” media and diregarding what their loyal viewers want.

Its not a matter of Black or White, Gay or Straight. Its a matter of common decency and respect. Clearly he has not learned when to keep his mouth shut - including these recent comments about his firing being racially motivated.
Its sad because he’s a talented actor but I’m increasingly less tolerant of his behavior.

Are you kidding me. The man insulted a co-worker by using the f_word. Not only once but several times. Now he is trying to place blame on others by using the race card, and trying to say the individual that he revered to will gain from this. Oh Please, he deseved what he got, he is supposed to be an intelligent individual.

I will not be watching Grey’s Anatomy any more - simple as that.
Isaiah had consequences for his comments. He should not be losing his jobs. As for the Black man who commented that African Americans are fighting to be Americans - he has been miseducated. We are not fighting to be Americans. America is our residence because of forced migration and murderous colonization and culture destruction. If we wanted to live, we had to (and still have to) imitate white American culture. We do not have free speech or the right to our opinions - without severe consequences. We are forced to endure the hegemonic scripts and attitudes of the Euro-American. I will not be watching anything with Patrick Dempsey or any of them that beat the drum for the elimination of Isaiah Washington. I am glad he spoke out about the continued racism and stereotypical roles and expectations for Black men. So many times when Black men speak out, they are fired. This is so disgusting. I am going to send out to my email list and have people email ABC regarding this. People are fighting in Iraq - most Black and Brown low income people - supposedly for free speech. Every war - men in my family fought. When do we get free speech? When will White Americans get over their feelings of supremacy where only their paradigms exist? People have different opinions.

I said there is so much going on in my life and the world that I am not even going to get angry over this.

I did vow I would not watch the show anymore and that way I would not have any reminders of what happened and how much I would miss his character.

How they can just take your job away when you are trying to support your famiy is just crazy!

I hope and will continue to pray until it comes back in spades for T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigel for keeping that going until they finally and successfully ruined the man’s career and family.

In most workplaces in America, harrassing coworkers verbally or physically generally leads disciplinary action if not termination. People need to separate the actor from the character. Just because you love the character doesn’t mean that the actor should get away with unacceptable behavior. People are all up in arms about celebrity justice when it comes to Paris Hilton, so why should Isaiah Washington be let off the hook for HIS behavior?

I have to look at it both ways. Being a black man I feel he should have been fired. It’s not any worse than being called the “N” word. America need to get over their fear of Gay people, and being hateful. Black men/women are the last that need to call anyone out of his/her name. When are grand parents fought to be americans. We are the ony race of people who have gone from Nigga to Colored, to Negro, to Afro American, to Black, to African American, and the government is getting ready to change it again to Black American. STOP, STOP, STOP.

HOMOPHOBIC??? What happened to HOMOSEXIUAL?? O, right, the Liberal spin word, “GAY” If people find homosexual practices to be disgusting, it doesn’t mean that they hate, fear or want to attack gays. It just means that they think that homosexuals are yucky weirdoes and that is all. Homophobic?? Afraid of Homosexuals?? Give me a break.

The Liberal media just wanted to crucify Washington to strike fear into any one that hurt the feelings of one of their little gay babies. It worked. Did no onme else notice how guarded his fellow actors were with their comments? They feared for their careers if they defended Mr. Washington in any way. Cowards all. Typical actors.

This Liberal media seems a bit biased when it comes to freedom of speech. They want to tell us what we are free to say and forbidden to say. It’s a shame men and woman are dying each day in Iraq so we can sit in front of our computers and get bent out of shape over people who make more money in one month than the average person makes in their entire lifetime? You want to place the blame on someone? Blame the media they’re the ones blasting the airwaves and internet whenever someone so much as drinks a glass of water. Someone comes out or is forced out of the closet. Wham! The media can’t let it go. The National Enquirer gets ahold of it, then the tv stations, then the internet. Anna Nicole Smith dies not saying that life isn’t meaningful, but her death, life and funeral was turned into a circus. A celebrity can’t even enjoy their wedding day without the paparazzi flying overhead trying to take pictures. They can’t even enjoy the birth of a child, something that woman do everyday, but because it’s a celebrity suddently it’s big news. Why? Because we’ve turned into an ambulance chasing society. We can’t wait to see what disgusting thing someone’s going to eat on fear factor, we can’t wait to laugh at a person who truly can’t sing on american idol. It doesn’t matter that this person may be crushed beyond repair it’s more important that we get the chance to sit, watch, and laugh. We throw tons of food away each day, but we never think about the family of 5 running to the rescue mission for a meal. We get bent out of shape because Isaiah Washington got fired and already has another job, but what about the guy who’s worked at a plant for 32 years, shows up to work only to realize the placed is chained up and closed without warning. For the most part celebrities are financially set, look at paris hilton, what about the service veteran who can’t get proper medical care. Folks they are a lot more important issues to be concerned about?

we tend to not forgive anyone, that says anything marginal, which could offend us. Therefore we (Blacks) should be held accountable also. Isaiah should be disappointed with himself not anyone else, after all if he did not say what he did, he would still be acting on Greys anatomy

Point well taken (jcalaska)..it seems you have done your research and I stand corrected. But I was actually speaking about Jews who were sent to gas chambers and starved during the Holocaust. I would never imply that all of racial history had something to do with this situation today. I am simply saying how is race and sexual orientation the same? No one chooses their race, but we chose our lifestyle. Furthermore, why should I embrace anyone who is gay when they don’t embrace it themselves? TR Knight was in the “closet” and was forced to come out. I am sure once his career took off he would have done an “Ellen” but it did not happen that way. I do not agree with gay/lesbian relationships, however I will respect your decision to live your life because there’s only one person who can judge you. I just dont think that gay/lesbians have a right to shove their lifestyles down anyone’s throat. Keep it to yourself, just like straight people do. IW said what any straight man would say to a man who sleeps with men. I am not saying he was right but he did not deserved to be fired. Its late and I have got to catch criminals so, this discussion has been fun. Best wishes to IW, and GA although I do not think the show will last another 2 seasons. Finally, for “jcalaska”..I do not need a lesson in history. I have lived it. My heart goes out to anyone would have been killed because of their lifestyle or the color of their skin. Seriously, I believe the topic is about why this man was fired in the first place. Thanks for your words of wisdom. I feel so much better now that you have so politely put me in my place.

A reading of the *facts* that my predecessors have posted on this board makes clear why Washington’s conduct was rightly criticized. In this case, I would rather that he hadn’t been fired. But, some of the comments posted on this board about gays speak volumes. It is as though we were the reason for Washington’s firing, rather than his own homophobic comments. That’s like saying that women are responsible every time someone suffers the consequences of demeaning them with the b word. Here are some particularly hate-filled examples:

From Nettris: I am so sick of gays throwing their disgusting lifestyles down everyone’s throat…

From RICK: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM AN INDUSTRY WHICH IS FULL OF GAYS & LESBIANS…

From Joyo: … just because they’re enthralled with their lifestyle doesn’t mean everyone else is.

From Paul: As a straight white guy I am sick of the homosexual agenda…

From Amy: Unfortunately people offend others every day, but their jobs are not at risk. [Amy, I’m sorry that you seem to have such a callous attitude about calling someone something that demeans their very existence, and aside from the fact that you cast hate-based language as merely “offending” people, you’re also incorrect about employment consequences. People lose their jobs all the time for using the n word, or the f word, or the b word. Check with your Human Resources professional at your job for accurate details.]

And this particularly irresistible quote from Nettris: Gays have not been tortured and lynched, beaten for looking at the opposite race, sent to gas chambers, buried alive, starved to death, sent to prison when they were innocent..the list goes on and on. [Note to Nettris: actually, gays have been victims of all of these horrific crimes. I understand your need to express your opinion, but your comments are so historically incorrect that you’re doing a disservice to your own argument. It doesn’t take much research to find out that gays were sent to gas chambers in the Holocaust; beaten to death on multiple unprosecuted occasions; forced to have little or no contact with their families by the court system; fired from their jobs; kicked out of the military even when they spoke Arabic and the military desperately needed Arabists; vilified by politicians, etc, etc. As you aptly said, “The list goes on and on…” The fact that you’ve converted the discussion on whether Washington should have been fired, to a free-for-all on whether discrimination against gays is a historically valid topic, speaks volumes.]

This whole thing is silly. I am so sick of gays throwing their disgusting lifestyles down everyone’s throat (My opinion). Who cares if you are gay or not? TR Knight seemed a little on that side if you asked me from the first moment I laid eyes on him. Furthermore, IW was fired because he called this young man and a word..it is not a slur. Gays have not been tortured and lynched , beaten for looking at the opposite race, sent to gas chambers, buried alive , starved to death, sent to prison when they were innocent..the list goes on and on. My goodness what is the big deal?IF he is gay why was it such a secret if he was comfortable with his lifestyle decision? So next season we will have to watch Meredith and Derrick in a love triangle with her half sister? Callie and George in a triangle with Izzy? Come on, where is the acting? The only characters that was not so predictable was IW and Sandra Oh. Who’s gonna handle Yang (not a slur people!) now? Whose gonna be the best heart doctor now? Dr. Burke cannot be replaced..this is very disheartening. The whole situation from the very beginning. I am not sure if I will watch GA now. One person got his way because of his lifestyle decision and the all his friends that are castmates (Hiegl, Dempsey) will probably leave the show because they want more money or to explore other options. It always happens this way. Good show, actors think they are worthy of more money when their characters suck! I am glad that Kate Walsh left, I hope the others take the same action and leave. See if TR , Dempsey and Hiegl make the show. What a waste of talent!
