Isaiah Washington Off of 'Grey's Anatomy'

Washington: 'I'm Mad as Hell and I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore.'

ABC Television Studios announced Friday morning that Isaiah Washington’s contract will not be renewed for next season – in other words, he’s been fired.

“Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes called Isaiah this morning and informed him of the decision.

TV Guide reported that the decision was made based on “a pattern of problematic behavior.”

Several months ago, Isaiah created a firestorm of controversy when he allegedly used an anti-gay slur to describe fellow castmate T.R. Knight.

Then, at the Golden Globe Awards in January, he said the same thing backstage when trying to deny he’d said it in the first place.

“Grey’s” star Katherine Heigl, who describes T.R. as one of her “best friends,” was furious at Isaiah, and she let him know it.

Gay rights groups, and Heigl herself, immediately demanded an apology from Isaiah.

Since then, Isaiah has tried to make amends, seeking therapy, meeting with officials from gay rights groups, and even filming a public service announcement in which he said “words have power” to hurt or heal.

But after he made the comment, it seemed the damage was irreparable.

Last month’s “Grey’s” finale opened the door for Isaiah to leave – and not come back – after his character’s marriage to Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) was delayed, and he cleaned out their apartment.

Today, Isaiah released a statement, saying, “I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.”

I am very disappointed also and will not watch it…He made a mistake, everyone does… What is the hangup?
A hooker can be a hooker, a thief a thief, and a gay a gay, so I thought… it’s okay to make moral judgements on the first two but not third when the first two may not be fulltime life choices… interesting,

What infuriates me is that TR is the weakest character on the show…and is going to be rewarded 125,000 per episode…

Like the someone else said, where is the compassion? Burke’s character drew me and kept me coming back, he and Christina’s…..

I dont even care how they replace him, I wont be watching it neither….

Sheri has made some good points…It is sad…

Too bad Isaiah Washington had to learn the hard way. I’ll miss his character on Grey’s but that won’t stop me from watching. When Michael Richards spewed his racist comments I was all for his being made to pay the only way it would hurt. When Don Imus uttered his infamous mutterings he was made to pay. You suffer the consequences of your actions. I’m sure Richards lost money after his tirade. I know Imus did. Washington should have to pay also. It’s funny how some people wanted Richards and Imus’s head on a platter, but think Washington should be left alone. Sorry folks, it doesn’t work that way. Words hurt. They hurt the people they’re aimed at, and eventually they’ll hurt the people that said them.

Well, well, well. ABC finally did the right thing. Good for them. I will miss Burke on Grey’s, but not Washington. His behavior was shameful and bigoted and apparently created a hostile working environment. There are no “greys” aboout it. Washington needs to wake up or he’s going to have Val Kilmer’s career. I will continue watching Grey’s and “Private Practice.” I won’t watch anything Washington appears in. The more we tolerate prejudice and bigotry anywhere from anyone, the longer it will last.

In response to Sherri 22 from Chicago. I agree with most of your post. Only one thing…..O.J. Simpson got away with murder. He wasn’t white. Where was the justice there? It’s funny because all the white people were saying it was because he was black. They were trying to make a point. Maybe somebody else is trying to make a point with Paris. I don’t know. I never watched Grey’s anatomy but I don’t think they should have let him go. FREE SPEECH!!!! THIS IS AMERICA. Or have we forgotten. I think some are so brain washed (not you) that they have forgotten this is America. SAD.

I thought we lived in a democracy, freedom of speech, especially if you’re speaking the truth. If TR Knight is a fag, he’s a fag. I guess we blacks have to wait another 100 year to enjoy the freedom whites have, just ask Michael Richards. Fired for speaking the truth. To think our soliders are overseas fighting for the freedom of others.

I’m Mad AS HELL also! Why because Isaiah Washington should be on the next season. I’m not against any race so please don’t get that wrong, but I’m about to show you an example of how “HOLLYWOOD” treats Blacks different then they do WHITE”. 1. If Patrick Dempsey would have called T.R. Knight the “F” word then you know good as I do that they would not be letting him go. The most they would have done was gave him a pay cut and not let him appear on a couple of episodes. 2) Remember when Janet Jackson’s Breast came out of her bra durning the super bowl? They mad her say sorry to America! But a couple of weeks later at the MTV Music Awards Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears tounge kissed in front of America! Did they make them say sorry to America? Hell NO! 3. They just let that air head Paris Hilton out of jail early cause she was sick,!!! Come on. Did they do that for Lil’ Kim? Hell NO, they mad her serve her full sentence. why because they BLACK and their WHITE! What do you think or is it just me?

Where is the compassion and understanding?

I don’t agree with the decision to let Isaiah Washington go. I too will not be watching “Grey’s” anymore. This was my most favorite show ever. It was funny and serious. It had everything that a great show should have and that is why it appealed to so many people.

Where is the compassion and understanding? He made a mistake. He was sorry for it. We as human should be more compassionate and understanding of others that act different or look different. Let our compassion win their hearts over. ABC should not be so vindictive and hurtful. Insteand, ABC should have tried to show him a higher ground and treat him with understanding and love. No one is perfect. What goes around comes around. Show some compassion and humanity EVERYDAY.

I loved his character and believe we are going way to far in this Country. I have been called worse at my job and no one got fired. He apologized and I believed he was sincere. I for one will be not be watching Grey’s anymore. Goodbye, you had a good show because of the chemistry between all the characters.

What racist remarks are you speaking about KH? I only remember him making a comment about somebody being “gay” etc. All this PC is ridiculous.

HOORAY!!! This man needs to realize racial comments are not just black and white. The black community also needs to reprimand their own if they want others to take them seriously. I raised four children and taught them all about racism and the “N” word and that it is not acceptable but the black community has taught them otherwise. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Racism is Racism if you don’t like being treated badly don’t do it to someone else!!!!!!
