Apolo Named 'Dancing' Champ, Judges Reveal Who Was to Blame for Laila's Loss

Olympic skater, hunky bachelor – and “Dancing with the Stars” champion! Apolo Anton Ohno has it all -- and “Extra” has the backstage moments you didn’t see on Tuesday night’s big finale.

Last year’s champion Cheryl Burke came right to “Extra” with this year’s brand new champ, Julianne Hough.

Cheryl joked, “I thought I had it good, but you have it really good!”

But Julianne is giving Apolo all the glory! “You know I just had the best dance partner this season,” she said.

Apolo earned even more words of praise from the judges, and we got their first reaction to the mega-finale at the Whisper Lounge in L.A.

Judge Len Goodman revealed Apolo’s secret when he told us, “What was so good about him was he was good at any dance.”

But Len was singing a different tune last week when he told Apolo that his routine was “all gyration and raunch!”

“I did give him a hard time,” Goodman admitted. “Deservedly so!”

When Laila Ali went down for the count, losing her biggest fight to Apolo, she confessed, “I’m pissed!”

Surprisingly, the judges blamed her exit on her own partner – Maksim Chmerkovskiy!

They’re saying it was all due to Maks’ choreography on Monday’s show, which left Laila dancing by herself.

“Laila’s left on the stage. He just left her laying there! It was a blunder,” Len said.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba added, “She got up by herself, which is a no-no in dancing.”

Meanwhile, it was “Bye Bye Bye” for Joey Fatone, but don’t feel too bad for him – he’s happy to be the biggest loser!

“My waist was a size 36 to 38 when I started,” Joey said. “I was about 235 pounds. My waist now is about a 33, 34!”

Judge Len also revealed what he says was the biggest moment of the season: Heather Mills.

Her touching return to the finale was especially inspirational for an 8-year-old amputee.

Heather told us, “A lot of people who've lost limbs are like, I can do anything.”

There is only ONE reason to watch Dancing with the Stars, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The only thing Maksim is to blame for is the success of the show. This talented man inspires young, old, female and male to want to dance. Every woman wishes to dance with him and every man wishes they could dance like him. Extra, Len and Carrie Ann apologize. ABC make Maks an offer he can’t refuse. NO Maks! NO Rhonda!

OMg, Apolo deserved to win. I think laila was way to confident. so veiwers might have thought that others would vote for laila, or that no one would cause she is so confident she would take home the trophy.

Apolo’s biggest compitition would have had to been Joey. he was a really good showman. but of course he lost. Apolo had the whole game in the palm of his hand from week one!

Laila and Maks were my favorites, but, I thought Julianne and Apollo were set to win from the beginning because DWTS had a new target market of 18-25 year olds (the American Idol market). DWTS were trying to attract a younger viewing audience. American Idol, which has a young viewing audience, is DWTS’s competition. I don’t think its ironic that the youngest couple on DWTS won and the youngest person on American idol won.

It was the judge Len who said a great dance is when choreography, music and performance comes together.
The contestants of Dancing With the Stars don’t choose their music. I think it was by design that Apolo and Julianne got more contemporary hip hop music and the other contestants got Michael Jackson and Donna Summers. Since there was a young viewing audience, this year, they voted for the young people. Had their been a young viewing audience last year, perhaps Mario and Karina would have won (with their hip hop “Bust a Move” over Emmett and Cheryl’s (M.C. Hammer…whose music is not considered hip hop)

So, the one element that the dancers cannot control, but, factor heavily in their ability to win is music.

Apolo and Julianne’s music was consistently more contemporary and attractive to the thousands of new young voters, who made the winning difference in the final vote.

Apolo and Julianne were set up to win this because its “good for business” and the future of DWTS. DWTS wanted the same success and longevity as American Idol and understood that a younger (18-25 year old) viewing audience would take them there as it had with American idol. Callie

I loved Laila and Maks from the beginning. In realizing Laila isn’t a small little girl, Maks did an exceptional job at turning Laila “into a girl”. Other dancers used props during the show and never go berated for such tactics. Laila and Maks used a pillow and hankerchief for their dances and were told that this was a dancing contest… Why didn’t Len say this to the other dancers? I think they were nictpicking at Maks. If they have bad feelings towards Maks, then they shouldn’t be judges. I think Laila had a good point saying that the freestyle was suppose to be different. She showed grace throughout the show. The Freestyle should have been different than what we normally saw from her. It seemed the judges expected Joey and Apollo to do pretty much the same as in their normal routines. Laila and Maks did something different, and they get marked down. I personally think DWTS need new judges. Judges who can be impartial. I think all three stars did an exceptional job, as well as their professional instructors. Actually a kudos to all the stars and professional dances who try to bring us entertainment with the show. Boo’s for the so-called judges.
Maks is really a treat to look at, for me anyway. I think Laila and he made a good team. Extra, you owe Maks an apology. You should also ask Laila for her opinion. I’m sure she doesn’t blame Maks for not winning. I’m sure Maks doesn’t blame having Laila as his partner for him not winning either.

One more from me. I think the judges need to realize that this is Hollywood, not Blackpool…lighten up. Although technique is important, and I think Apolo had alot of it, his dancing always left me cold. No warmth in his dancing but alot of sex and I guess sex sells. There was alot of warmth, chemistry, whatever you want to call it with Laila and Maks. Because of her limitations, she really had to learn and perform ‘the basics’. Her steps were not ‘hidden’ by alot of show and that’s what I liked. Each of the couples were good, but strip down all the razzmatazz…pure dance basics, and Laila and Maks were the best IMO.

OK when are you all going to realize that it is these gay professional male dancers that prevent their celebrity female partners from winning?

I am so tired of watching their feminine dancing movements. It is really disturbing.

I truly have enjoyed watching the male celebrities dance. They show how a true man should dance, making his female partner look great not leaving her on the floor while they pose for the camera. The hand and feet movements that these so called males exhibit are truly sickening. Butch it up guys will you please? It is laughable.

What is happening now is that female celebrities are reluctant to appear on the show with these fag partners.

What I see as the main disadvantage for Laila and Max was…their music.

I’m sorry…compared to “Push It” by Salt and Peppa, for example, “She’s a Lady” was slow and old (Just as Tom Jones is now).

Walk like an Egyptian…come on.

I understand the the artists do not pick the music (except for freestyle) and Laila and Maks did good with what they were given.

Laila had presence and danced very well. Apollo and Joey had you and gimmicks on their side. Laila and Maks had the techniques of ballroom dancing. Their second paso doble was the best of the season.

They will always be my winning team.

I agree that there is a big problem with the judges, Bruno telling Billy Ray his performance was crap, Carrie Ann telling Clyde he is the worst dancer and Len didn’t judge everyone on an equal basis. Telling Apolo his dance was good but expects great from him and giving him lesser scores because of it and then giving another dancer higher scores for a lesser performance, saying basics steps are good. Len raved over Laila being sexy in one dance and then tells Apolo he was raunchy, good thing the viewers get to vote and show Len how wrong he is. ABC should re-evaluate the judges and get some new ones.

I think this was the toughest year ever for DWTS, but it as also the bst so far, and the 3 finalisrs made it so dificult, they all deserved to win for sure but if not then I agree with the chioces for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
However the judges leave alot to be desired, they judge the stars like the pros and they ar not pros, and if someone shows to be a good dancer then they are almost judged like a pro and thats not fair, they are people and not pros and the judges are to harsh and unfair with their judging for sure, they need to give credit where its due, and back off there personal opinions, people do have feelings even if they are stars or athletes, and even the pro dancers working with the stars need a big hand, they have done well with working with the stars, where the judges just sit and run there mouths.
Come on judges lets get real, or bring in some humans to be judges
Congrats to all the winners, but this year there should have been a 3 way tie.

Maks demonstrated “unwavering” commitment to Laila’s performance. If the judges believed the Paso Doble choreography was wrong then why score it “29”? THAT IS A MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION!!!!
- Maks’ takes dancing and teaching quite seriously, I will never believe this was his fault.
- If I understand correctly, the final scores are split 50%[judges] plus 50% [fans].
At the end of the Monday Night, Laia and Maks trailed Joey and Apolo. Laila had not attained the judges “overall” max points. Then the fans voted, keeping in mind even if Laila and Maks received 6.85 million votes it will only count for 50% of overall score. For example if homework counts for 20% of an overall grade and quizzes count for 80%, if you score 100 = 80%. No student can change the outcome of the missed homework, that is the way I see the judges score. At the end of the night it was 55/60 for Laila and Maks. Tuesday night “giveaway” score of *30* had very little bearing on the final score. I think the judges, ABC, and producers must solve the problem between the “pros” and the unqualified judges. Was it Karina’s fault Mario lost last year? This was so unnecessary, why place blame after the competition is over? EXTRA, please take the blinders off and see this for what it is —-JUDGES vs MAKS.

It was brought up several times by the judges that they thought Maks wasn’t pushing Laila far enough in the choreography. If Laila was able to progress, why wouldn’t Maks use that to their advantage? I think Maks worked around Laila’s ability. Not so good with foot work, but had a nice wiggle butt strut!
Apolo #1, Joey #2 and Laila #3 was the best most fair outcome DWTS ever had!

To say that Maks didn’t take full advantage of the opportunity he was given, is absolutely ridiculous. You say that Laila can really dance, well the only way she was able to really dance was because of Maks.

If you’re going to make more then one comment but under different names, here’s a tip, scroll down to your first comment & use a different style/format of typing and wording for your second one.

Anyone, the judges or the public, who thinks that Maks’ choregraphy of the Paso Doble was to blame for them coming in third, are complete IDIOTS! Maks & Laila’s Paso was the best this season. To say that anyone else would have done a better job with Laila is also an IDIOT! I wonder if people would so readily put Maks down if he were American born, instead of Russian born?

The judges are correct!

I would have loved to have seen Laila paired with Jonathan (Heather Mill’s partner).

Laila Ali and Billy Ray were the most captivating celebrites on the show.

Laila could really dance. I will never understand why Maks did not take complete advantgage of the wonderful opportunity he was given.

How unprofessional to try and blame Maks for their losing. UNBELIEVABLE. I said it before…what makes Carrie Ann and Bruno competent judges of ballroom dancing? I saw NO ballroom in ‘In Living Color’ Ms Fly-Girl Carrie Ann and certainly NONE in Elton John’s corny video, Bruno. It was almost as if they were looking for something to mark them down on. Fortunately Laila and Maks will get more out of this than a little bad press from Extra…And the public got a real, grown-up, sexy and great dance couple in these two…certainly with more class than Extra or the Judges!

About Max and Laila, I think he is an excellent dancer ,but she was not that consistent on her dances.Sometimes good sometimes ok.I think this story about blame in Max is just a set up ,because someone needs to be blame for her thrid place other than herself. If you have a bad knee that need surgery do bad , why are you going to a dancing contest that requires so many hours of practice a day by bending ,rotating and etc.Come on people wake up ! Someone had to be blame and they just pick the poor Max!Chins up Max because it was not your fault but only hers.
