Don Imus' Number One Supporter: His Wife

Don Imus may be gone from CBS, but now everyone is working overtime to clean up the mess he left behind, and “Extra” has details on the all-new fallout.

“Wow, talk about a crash and burn,” movie legend Robert Redford said of the situation. “I think he’s been asking for it for a long time; you can’t get away with that stuff.”

Also in support of Imus’ termination was Oprah Winfrey, who appeared on “Larry King Live” Monday night.

“I have my own radio channel, and if someone on my radio channel had made such degrading remarks, I would have fired them,” she said.

Meanwhile, NFL great Tiki Barber, who starts his “Today” show gig on Monday, tackled the controversy for “Extra.”

“With great power comes a great responsibility,” Barber said. “And he's paying for it.”

“Extra” learned today that Imus is leaning on his wife, Deirdre, for support, as she sits in and takes over the morning show mic for her exiled husband.

“We hope to come to a healing at some point here,” the missus said.

Deirdre, the best selling author of “Green This!,” met the radio mogul in 1992 when she auditioned for a skit on his radio show.

They married two years later, and she was by her husband’s side Thursday night inside his private meeting with the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“The hate mail being sent to them must stop. These women and courageous and beautiful,” Diedre said of the collegiate athletes.

So what’s next for the man with more than 40 years of radio experience attached to his name?

We’re told CBS will take a $15 million hit by killing the syndicated Imus show… but the big question is who will replace him.

Media Week’s Marc Berman gave “Extra” a few possible names.

“Look at somebody like a Ray Romano, or a Jerry Seinfeld, somebody like a Jamie Foxx, Steve Harvey,” Berman said. “There's a lot of old TV faces that could step in and do the job.”

Firing Mr. Imus was ridiculous and extremely unfair. Who hasn’t at one time or another spoken without thinking…and later regretted it?! I believe that his apology is sincere and has been accepted by the basketball team. And, all those self righteous do-gooders should lighten up!

I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I’VE SEEN ON TV ABOUT IMUS !IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH. BECAUSE IT’S NOW OFFICAL, WHITE PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAVE LOST THERE RIGHT TO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DISLIKE BLACKS. WE HAVE TO EXCEPT THEM, WITHOUT ANY REGUARD OF OUR OWN CHOICES. WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO OPEN OUR MOUTHS ABOUT A BLACK PERSON IN PUBLIC OR WE WILL BE TAKEN TO COURT OR FIRED FROM OUR JOBS. WHEN IS THIS CRAP GOING TO STOP? EVEN OPRA MAKES ME SICK, YOU WOULD THINK THE WAY SHE WINES THAT SHE JUST STEPPED OFF ONE OF THE SHIPS IN THE EARLY 1800’s BELIEVE ME OUR ANCESTORS HAD TO HAVE BEEN OUT OF THERE MINDS. AND NOW WERE ALL BE PAYING FOR IT FOR WHO KNOWS HOW MANY CENTURYS !!! I AM 58 yrs. OLD, I NEVER LIVED AROUND BLACK PEOPLE IN MY LIFE, NEVER WENT TO SCHOOL WITH ANY BLACK CHILDREN. AND I STILL DON’T LIVE AROUND BLACKS . NO ONE , NO ONE, TELLS ME WHO MY FRIENDS ARE AND HOW I HAVE TO THINK, AND WHO I HAVE TO LIKE. I AM STANDING UP FOR MY RIGHT OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
IT’S REALLY SAD !!!!!

When many of us were young we were told that “sticks and stones can break my bones, but names will never hurt me”. Old and tired cliche, right? But were it not for Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson’s hyped interpretation and public notice to these young basketball players about the four words Don Imus uttered, they may never have had to play “victim” in this fiasco. Was what Imus uttered wrong? Everyone seems to be asking this question and a hundred others right now, and I say it was simply a flippant sophomoric remark that meant no ill will to anyone. It was humor that Imus and his staff just dropped as a way of describing a tough looking team in the slang of the hip hop culture with no personal ill will attached. If these bright young, basketball team members are as mature and gifted as they appeared in their press conference, then they will understand that the remarks made are just names that will never hurt them. In fact, as we all know now, it will elevate their status and provide them more opportunities than they ever would have had if this never occurred. Funny, isn’t it?

Don Imus did many good charitable acts during his career. Did the world forget that? Amen to those that are pointing out the double standards and free passes given to the rap “artists” and African Americans that can use even worse language in media and are given a free pass. This poor man is torn to shreds over a remark that is much milder than any offensive comment recently heard from African Americans. Did anyone happen to see Wanda Skyes on Jay Leno talk about the Imus situation? She stated that her publicist was getting calls asking her to make a comment on the situation and she responded to Jay Leno by saying “when did I become the spokesperson for nappy headed hos? (then grabs her hair and says) this ain’t nap these are curls” The audience laughed. And as the conversation/banter between her and Jay continued an obviously flustered Jay looks at the camera and says “Thank you very much I’ll be going off the air with Don Imus!” However, did the coach from the team call Wanda Skyes to the carpet for that comment? Where was Jesse and Al? Again another double standard. It was funny coming out of her mouth. Not funny coming out of Imus though. And again I say to Imus, you poor man. You are the true victim here. When you knew your remarks hurt those women you wanted to be the bigger person and apologize to the team in person. Did Al or Jesse give you the chance? No. They went for your job! And still proving you are the bigger person your wife is on the air continuing your charity drive. What amazing resolve. Good for you. Shame on them. Hope to hear on the air again on a station that deserves you.

Based on the comments here, the jury is in and Imus is, if not innocent, at least not guilty of a firing offense. Maybe it’s time we fired NBC and CBS by rejecting their programming. Then we should take a look at the advertisers who rushed to judgement as well. The organizations that unjustly fired Don Imus should not go unpunished.

So what’s the deal? Is it that only whitey can be prejudice (to prejudge) these days? I think if the hate monger like J. Jackson and A. Sharpton would shut the F*** up this would calm down a bit. I’m really tired of that useless pair. All the BS when someone white does or says something that can be blown out of bounds the media runs with it. Who really gives a sheet, My brother shot himself a couple of months ago because he was so tired of the BS and crappy people in this world. So many corporations lobby and the corrupt politics screwing us all and we keep getting bombarded by useless crap like Anna, Imus etc. Let Anna Rest in peace and leave Imus alone and do something more positive.

If Imus fans formally ban together to boycot NBC and MSNBC,or their spineless advertisers I will be the first one on board. I can’t stand when they talk about pain and injury to the Rutgers team. Pain and injury are not caused by verbal offenses. Pain and injury are caused when Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton play judge and jury like they did to the Duke lacross team.. Why isn’t their a public outcry for apology for the real pain and injury that these two ignorant men caused? There is absolutely no comparison here in damages. Those boys will suffer for the rest of their lives and so will their families. What has the Rutger’s team suffered but a whole lot of priceless publicity?

Imus deserved what he got! I agree with those people who say he had freedom of speech … but … that means freedom from prosecution. If anyone of us made such disparaging comments about or in front of a client/customer we would have been fired without a thought!

Still love you Imus, you messed up, but we all do. Sharpton is an idiot, and I want him to say he’s sorry to my fellow white boys at Duke. They aren’t rapists! Why isn’t the flea bag that accused them being charged? Oh, yeah, she’s black, silly me. We whites need to get our backbone BACK!!!!

Personally, I think the executives of MSNBC and CBS are both spineless to allow their decision to be persuaded by the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. MSNBC is so outraged by what Mr. Imus said that they had to fire him yet they haven’t covered anything else since then!!! When there’s no more interest in Don Imus’ story, no one will be watching MSNBC anyway.

I do not think that Imus should have been fired. Did you ever listen to rap music? Also, did you here pretacher on CNN with Anderson Cooper? He was right on the mark with his comments!!

What can a black person say to a white person and it be considered racist???? I’ve had a black person call me several names (which I considered racist) but I was told it was no big deal. On the other hand if I where to have said something to her, what would have happened to me. I was told that I would be in trouble for trying to start a riot. WHATEVER Black people are actually treated better than white. They are put on a pedestal and we walk on eggshells, so not to say anything offensive. GET OVER IT!

It’s truly a sad state of affairs when the two blatant Profiteers of fanning the fires of Racism and making sure it never goes away and whose REAL accomplishments in life don’t amount to a hill of beans (Sharpton, Jackson) can manipulate the main-stream Media Gate-Keepers into Choking off and killing Hall-of-Fame Broadcaster IMUS who has done SO MUCH to help SO MANY and who so enriched the lives of millions and millions of listeners each day. Congratulations Reverends! You’ve cheated us all, AGAIN. Who’s your NEXT target?

We have a real double standard working here , Imus has appologized to the girls . But you have Sharpton and Jackson who are the first to dump on white people ie: the Duke Team unjustly accused no one has appologised to them but Sharpton and Jackson was there to try to ruin their lives. Imus did not invent the words he used if they ARE accepted as ok to use by black this is a free country we have one language if you can I can. no one objects when they call a white girl a ho. and trys to get them off the air. DOUBLE STANDARDS.

I will miss the IMUS show in the mornings since I can only take so much of the ABC, CBS, & NBC morning shows. I could turn to IMUS and get some discussion going on the events of the country. I also enjoyed his music breaks and most of his humor. Can’t think of anyone mentioned so far to take his place, such as Jamie Fox (ugh), Ray Ramano, etc. The market place should have decided whether the show stayed on, not a group of people who always have an excuse for their poor circumstances

Firing Imus was absurd. Sure, what he said was insensitive, but he apologized and they should have just ebded it right there! I hate double standards. You hear rappers hay the most craziest things and nobody bats and eyebrow. But then Imus, a man who has does some very great things in his past, says ‘nappy headed’ and he’s proclaimed as a huge bigot.

al sharpton and jessie jackson should be kicked out of the country for even putting “REVEREND” in front of their names…it should be hypocrite in front of their name…what about the Taywana Brawley case?????? and the jewish case with jessie jackson..come on we know where the racist BS comes from after those incidents…then rap and comics need to be banned for their comments…whites are being targeted, and believe this…we will be right on top of ANY speech or anything that is said by Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson!!!! I guess freedom of speech is only good for certain people…

It’s a shame the African American community doesn’t realize we all feel we are one and the same! We are AMERICANS! If you’re legal and living in America - we are all ONE. The African American’s would best be utilizing their voices and talent to more useful causes that really make an impact and make a difference. Don Imus is a good man, an entertainer, a loving husband and father and DOES and HAS made a difference. Are you up for that challenge??????? Come on, let’s all make a difference for OUR America. I’ll be tuning to SIRIUS Radio to listen to you Mr. Imus. I’ll support you whereever you go.

No one can replace him. It was a horrible, hurtful comment to make, but anyone who watches Imus knows he was just flapping his jaws. He does nothing but good in this world. He was the only good thing msnbc had. I will not watch msnbc again! We all, whatever color, should eliminate any type of discriminatory language towards others. msnbc and cbs will lose a lot of money as they should. A lot of “hate” language is found on tv and especially radio. Carefully worded hate messages like those by Rush Limbaugh are somehow tolerated.
