Don Imus' Number One Supporter: His Wife

Don Imus may be gone from CBS, but now everyone is working overtime to clean up the mess he left behind, and “Extra” has details on the all-new fallout.

“Wow, talk about a crash and burn,” movie legend Robert Redford said of the situation. “I think he’s been asking for it for a long time; you can’t get away with that stuff.”

Also in support of Imus’ termination was Oprah Winfrey, who appeared on “Larry King Live” Monday night.

“I have my own radio channel, and if someone on my radio channel had made such degrading remarks, I would have fired them,” she said.

Meanwhile, NFL great Tiki Barber, who starts his “Today” show gig on Monday, tackled the controversy for “Extra.”

“With great power comes a great responsibility,” Barber said. “And he's paying for it.”

“Extra” learned today that Imus is leaning on his wife, Deirdre, for support, as she sits in and takes over the morning show mic for her exiled husband.

“We hope to come to a healing at some point here,” the missus said.

Deirdre, the best selling author of “Green This!,” met the radio mogul in 1992 when she auditioned for a skit on his radio show.

They married two years later, and she was by her husband’s side Thursday night inside his private meeting with the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“The hate mail being sent to them must stop. These women and courageous and beautiful,” Diedre said of the collegiate athletes.

So what’s next for the man with more than 40 years of radio experience attached to his name?

We’re told CBS will take a $15 million hit by killing the syndicated Imus show… but the big question is who will replace him.

Media Week’s Marc Berman gave “Extra” a few possible names.

“Look at somebody like a Ray Romano, or a Jerry Seinfeld, somebody like a Jamie Foxx, Steve Harvey,” Berman said. “There's a lot of old TV faces that could step in and do the job.”

What a wonderful comment Debbie has made, and from the others in the same vein here. There is a lot more to be addressed, and this may be the beginning of exactly that happening. And, about time too!

Instead of bashing the whites, there is a great need for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, to stop the rot which has set in with many of the blacks in the way they insult each other. ESPECIALLY, in rap songs, and in using these horrid words, which insult women of all races.

Respect should be given and demanded for all!

I am a black woman and I really don’t think this man should have been fired! I do think that he should have been suspended for period of time, but I’m sick of us getting mad about what some white person says about us when we sit back and say all kinds of God awful things about ourselves in movies, songs, and comedy clubs and on the radio. If we are going to sit back and laugh about what’s being said in these places then why should this man be fired? I know these girls didn’t deserve what he said and I was mad as hell that he said it, and I really think that nobody should be saying the things that are degrading to our race. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson remind me of what we called Ambulance chasers here in Detroit. I want to know if Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are going to put an end to this crazy what known as “The Annual Pimps and Hoes Party” that was given over this past weekend here in Detroit at some club? Do you know how stupid it sounded to hear about Don Imus being fired for what he said, then during the commercial break on the radio station to hear the advertisement for the Annual Pimps and Hoes party being given here in Detroit! I know this man was wrong for what he said I don’t condone what he said, but I’m sick about what we are doing to ourselves, why wouldn’t people make fun of us, when we say all kind of things about ourselves and sit back and laugh about it.

What the Hell is going on here? DAMN whatever happened to free speech? Sticks and stones. Has everyone become so sensitive that we can no longer utter the words that “may” offend others?

Why is it ok for a black person to use the N word God forbid a white person use that word. The whole black community would be in an uproar about it.

And what Hell is racial rehab? Give me a break.

So maybe Imus shouldn’t have said what he did. In his position it was uncalled for. However most of the black rap artists of late, use derogatory language all the time. Does the record label drop them?

I didn’t hear from any women’s groups complaining about the women being called Hos. All of the focus was on the racial issue. When is the black community going to move on? Even when Mel Gibson had his drunken slip of the mouth, the Jewish community had their say and moved on.

Speaking for myself. I’m tired of walking around on eggshells. Out of fear that I may use my God given right as an American to say what I want. Even though it may not be nice.

America is sick and tired of the PC Brain Police! Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson take note: America is no longer buying into your lies!

Sounds to me like a whole bunch of people are thoroughly fed up with the double standard in this country and it’s about time our (us white folk, whitey, honky and other names you african american people call us and get away with) voices via email are being heard. I think the wrong race has been unfairly slapped with the term “racism”.

I have lived for 70 years and quite frankly, I believe this country is going to hell in a handbasket. From the executive branch of the US government to our court systems, I am disappointed in many many things that are going on today in the name of justice. What a shame!

I am an American, a natural born citizen, but not so proud as I once was. The young people growing up today don’t have a clue regarding the great country this once was and how hard their forefathers fought to make it that way. If our forefathers were alive today, they would hang their heads in shame for the way the America of today is behaving.

Thank you for letting me express some of my views.

TV Commentary is ONE WAY. The Career-Media experts “TALK” to us - always careful to say nothing that would jeopardize their careers, and WE swallow what is said - pardon me while I go throw up. If you want a TRUE picture of how the masses in our so-called Democracy feel about Imus’ lynching, then I suggest 2 things: 1) Read the results of THIS (Extratv) Poll (currently 87% saying that it was WRONG to Remove the IMUS show, and, 2) read these commentaries!!! The Internet is a wonderful 2-Way medium which in THIS case shows just how out-of-touch the Gate-keepers (Censors?) of the In-bred Media’s Bureaucratic Machine with the consensus of their audiences opinion. We, the unqualified to think out here feel VERY differently than those in the Media who pressured their bosses into being “outraged” and thus removing IMUS and diminishing OUR options. Long Live THE INTERNET!! Maybe it’s our last best hope!

Three things:

If Imus deserved to be fired, then so also should Bernard McGuirk. (as a matter of fact, 60 Minutes aired a piece of an old interview where Imus states “McGuirk is there to do [n-word] jokes.” McGuirk came from WFAN’s promotions department. He now reortedly lives with his wife and two kids in a nice area of Long Island. Time to move on, Bernie.

Also, MSNBC was employing a 7-second delay (at least) during Imus’ shows. NBC NEews President Steve Capus needs to find out and then define exactly under what conditions the delay’s ‘dump’ function is to be used. This event may never have happened

Finally: with freedom comes responsibility. There may exist a ‘freedom of speech,’ but it is up to our individual responsibility to determine when is the best time to exercise that freedom… and so that it does not infringe upon the rights of others.

Oooops. Oh well.

I think it is really a shame that the voices of the fans of Don Imus are not heard. I get so sick of hearing NBC and CBS try and cover up for the huge mistake they made. They didn’t show both sides of the Don Imus story on Dateline or 60 minutes. I also get so sick of hearing how he hurt those girls. He didn’t hurt anyone.. the media did that for him.

I have tried commenting FIVE times now and this site have not allowed it!

It is a waste of time writing in here as you can’t really say what you think. FREE SPEECH, this site has not heard of it!

This isn’t actually as complex as everyone is making it. Don Imus has the right to free speech, but CBS and MSNBC are not obligated by law to pay him a million dollars a year to deliver a message that they do not endorse. If someone truly believes Don Imus has done nothing wrong, they can pay for his show in their place.

I also don’t understand how rap lyrics have suddenly become the big topic of discussion. Yes, rappers do use the ‘H’ word, but more often than not they use the word to refer to women with incredibly low standards. Don Imus, on the other hand, used the word to describe a university basketball team.

The thin-skinned team should have just made a joke of this and moved on. They could call themselves the NHHL. As for myself, I will not be watching either msNBC or CBS any longer.

I’ve never heard of Imus before this explosive situation. Whose to blame for the over-exposure of his comment? A comment that he made jokingly as he merely viewed a tape of the Rutgers team! There must be a shortage of brain cells going around for Sharpton and Jackson to get on the bandwagon and make a federal case out of this, yet they close their ears to the lyrics of such offensive recordings BY RAPPERS that have repeated airplay for years on end. Oh yes… those are “African American” musicians that are entitled to THEIR freedom of speech. But when a white man makes an inappropriate comment… you might as well get out the shackles and hang him in the town square for his crudeness.
Such a HORRIFIC example of double standards. Sharpton and Jackson have too much time on their hands!

My very goodness, who HASN’T mis-stepped while enthusiastically making an observation?? Yes, he’s an on-air professional PERSONALITY, but who expects perfection in any profession?? An occasional faux-pas here and there is not enough to end one’s career…especially if one has also proven himself to be so compassionate and caring, regardless of a few saucy statements here and there!
Mind you, Mr. Imus was merely restating what so many of that particular culture say incessantly! If a person of color, even an on-air PERSONALITY were to say the same thing…that would be allowed.
Perhaps the ever present and ever helpful Jesse Jackson could help Imus by starting up a NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Caucasian People) Obviously such an organization would not be tolerated. How terribly racists those outspoken people of color are! And they are allowed and encouraged to be. Ditch the NAACP, and that ridiculous Rainbow Coalition…and just work as Americans to right the REAL wrongs.

IMUS was just being IMUS should he be fired? That is up to the people that pay that 10 million every year to put him on the air. I don’t like IMUS but if his show and I say SHOW has these types of statements on it then it is what it is. What I don’t like is when Al & Jessie get on the high horse and start pointing fingers at an old white guy for 3 little words when OPRA and all her cronies support people like EDDIE MURPHY and CHRIS ROCK who’s whole act it F this N this and HO that. When do they start cleaning up their own backyard? I didn’t see on the news anyone picketing DEAFJAM records for putting out CD after CD of RAP that comes with a warning label. Oh that’s right that’s a black company and EDDIE AND CHRIS are black and the rappers are black. I see if you’re black you can say whatever you want, whenever you want and get paid for it. I’m tired of double standard you can call me what ever you want but guess what I going to start saying whatever I want. I think they call that FREEDOM OF SPEECH and if I offend you tough. AL and Jessie clean up the music industry, clean up the gangs, clean up your act start pointing those AFRICAN AMERICAN fingers at Puffy Combs or Russell Simmons going on TV and tell young American to boycott them and lets see how long you last then.

I would like to elaberate on the comment about Oprah’s School—the day it opened a reporter asked her about white children—-she said she didn’t have to do anything for white children.I thought that was racist and hurtful and have always wondered why that wasn’t splattered all over the news—why she wasn’t questioned about the comment!!!Maybe some reporter could find that piece of film and play it over and over and over!!!!!!

Why is it that black people can say whatever they want either about each other or about white people but as soon as a white person says the slightest thing about a black person, it is a major deal. He has done incredible things for children with his charity work, both white and black children. Where was Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton then? They should have been there commending Imus but they wait until one comment is uttered and there they are. By the way, are there any white children in that prison school Oprah pats herself on the back for? And we have Black History Month! When exactly is White History Month? Anybody ever hear about reverse discrimination? Mr. Imus, when you find a new spot on the radio or television, I will be there listening to you!

I’m so sick of the double standard. All races should come down hard on any black racist from now on!!!!! Oprah I’m no longer one of your fans I thought you were more intelligent than that. To over look all the good Imus has done in charitable work you actually turn my stomach now with the way you see this issue. You’ve had Chris Rock ,Dave Chapelle and others on your show why not use them as an example and have them curb their language? Why didn’t you and Sharpton and Jackson stop all the this filthy language with the black community like Bill Cosby tried to do ( was scorned by his race for doing) It would give you more credibility. I fought long and hard for equality now I’ll fight for my own race because it’s obvious that the blacks see it as two wrongs make it right!!!!!!!

imus has did alot of good for all the people. he is not a racist, like sharpton and jackson. nbc and cbs as well as all the advertiser let us down.i will do my best to buy from different companies. if that means a honda instead of a G.M. so be it. its a better car any how.

I doubt that any of the women on the basketball team knew who Imus was before this incident and really could’t care less what he had to say. The race-baiters Jackson and Sharpton (who go around calling people chinks, kikes, and spics with impunity) goaded the team into being “outraged” to serve their own self-promotion to get media attention.
I also bet that a day doesn’t go by that someone on the team doesn’t call another player “ho”. That’s what blacks call each other all the time.
