You Tell Us: Is the Sex Abuse Plot Too Much for 12-Year-Old Dakota?

Dakota Fanning’s shocking and disturbing new role in the controversial movie “Hound Dog” is shaking up the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which stars Fanning and Robin Wright Penn, has everyone talking, as the 12-year-old big screen darling portrays a young child who survives her father’s sexual abuse.

We joined Dakota at the film fest in Park City, where the young starlet blasted her critics over their reaction to a controversial rape scene.

“Not once while we were filming or reading the script did anyone think it was controversial,” Fanning told “Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli. “I still don’t.”

The rape scene creating so much furor contains no nudity, but eludes to it with quick edits as a bare shouldered Dakota yells “Stop it!” and stares blankly into the sky.

“It's not anything like what they've been saying,” Dakota dished. “It's just been so blown out of proportion.”

Dakota also told “Extra” that not only are her parents okay with the so-called controversial movie, “They’re very supportive of anything that I choose to do.”

As for what drew her to “Hound Dog,” Fanning revealed, “I could just relate to her so much and her depth, and all the layers to her. And I just wanted to discover those.”

The young superstar, who has grown up on the big screen before our very eyes, also revealed that she chose the role hoping to become an inspiration for young victims of abuse.

“They can learn that even though you are born into hard times or you go through hardships, you can still survive,” she said.

Now that Dakota has shared her side of the controversy surrounding “Hound Dog,” “Extra” wants to hear your thoughts!

Is the 12-year-old star’s sex scene too much? We’ll voice your opinions on Thursday’s show!

She has no clue about real life. Only from what she is told on how to act.

I strongly beleive actress Dekota should not act in a role where she’s being raped. My “GOD” what are these parents thinking today just to let their young children star in roles like that “WAKE UP FOOLS” this is a crtical era were living in.

If it was a first time actress who didn’t know what she would be in for I might worry about being exploited in the way it was shot. But Dakota is such an extraordinary actress and knows what is necessary and excessive that I don’t think that it was too much for her.
There was no nudity and the scene was really created in the editing room.
so no I don’t think it was too much for Dakota.
If not her who else could have done it. There isn’t any one
I think people are objecting because it probably makes them uncomfortable to watch it and that is a good thing.
It is a horrible thing and people should be made that it happens in real life not that it is portrayed in a movie!!!

Many times our local theatres select plays that cast teens or young in roles that have adult content and costumes. We prepare them and under-dress them with parents involvement. We have had the same controversy as Dakota. Our youth and teens would agree with Dakota. To much is made out of it and will people really appreciate the real work they had to do to move someone into and through the emotion they feel. It’s the love of the art!

Dakota is a responsible, wonderful actress. She seems to have more wisdom than any of the adult “child stars” who have criticized her and her parents, and the new movie. While I have not yet seen the movie, I understand that there was no nudity, but the scene is disturbing. Child sexual abuse is disturbing, as is rape at any age! I applaud Dakota and her parents for the message they relate to victims of such crimes. She has always been level-headed and wise beyond her years!

WHY ARE PEOPLE MAKING SUCH A FUSS. THE SCENE THAT DAKOTA FANNING IS IN IS NOT AS BAD AS THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE LIFE TIME MOVIE ” BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA” (i think that was the title) IN THAT MOVIE THE LITTLE GIRL WAS NOT ONLY RAPED, BY HER MOTHERS HUSBAND,BUT SHE WAS ALSO BEATEN. IT YOU DON’T WANT THESE THINGS TO BE SEEN, THEN DON’T MAKE OR GO TO THOSE KINDS OF MOVIES. EVEN BETTER, INSTEAD OF USING CHILDREN USE LITTLE PEOPLE.

She is an actress. She has been in the movies since she was a little girl and knows how the spectacle world works. While everything is within the parameters of her contract there won’t be any embarrassment except for the people that do that in real life.

I absolutely do NOT think the plot is too much for a 12 year old actress. It is this type of thinking and questioning that allows this type of abuse to continue….shove it under the rug…hush it up…don’t dare speak of it. Believe me, the victims in real life are much younger than 12. Who will speak for these broken souls if we do not allow public discourse on this issue. God Bless Dakota Fanning for having the guts to tackle this subject.
And if you look at the world overall, in many countries, 12 years of age is acceptable for arranged marriage to a stranger…. or worse, to an uncle…all condoned by society in many parts of the world.
It happened to me and the secrecy around it is what kept the perpetrators from being brought to justice! The difference was that I was only 39 months old at the time. So thank you Dakota for your old sould and the maturity you bring to all your roles. Please, stop the soul-robbing abuse. It took me more than 40 years to find my way out of darkness and many others are still suffering in silence for what was done to them in the dark.

I am not a victim….I am a surviver. One who is rising up. The first story on a Catholic priest’s sexual abuse came out of Phoenix in 1989. (I know because I produced it for a national TV show.) At that time, I myself did not even know how that Phoenix was destined to rise from the ashes! This must be stopped now!

The story line sounds like one that should be seen. This does happen. I would have to see the content of the film in it’s entirety to fully see what the big deal may or may not be. People worried about the young actress having to be exposed to the topic, or people having to see the topic in a very realistic light. We all know this happens in our back yard, so what’s the problem with the big screen?

It may be a difficult subject, but 12 year old girls and younger are raped everyday and the public needs to know and understand that this happens.

Unless we are willing to look and understand that this horrible situation happens, how can we ever hope to prevent it in the future. We need to focus on stopping the abusers, not stopping the focus and attention of the abuse. The problem is not with a movie, but with the abusers that get away with the daily abuse.

I think it’s sad that this world has come to this. It’s a very horrible thing to have a scene of a 12 year old being raped, but realistically it’s happening all around the world. So, in my opinion, it’s not only right, it’s necessary. If atleast one little girl becomes strong enough to stop her abuser after watching this movie than it was absolutely worth it. I just wish that it wasn’t happening in the first place.

As a woman molested at the age of 8 by my own father, I applaud this, if I had been able to see this then (33 yrs ago) it would have helped me and maybe opened the eyes of the teacher, priest and family friend that I told then and asked for help. No one believed me, I ran away at age 16 (after 8 yrs. of abuse)and have never looked back. I think it’s ironic that my only escape was listening to Elvis, also part of this movie. If this movie helps one child then its done its job.

Why are folks making such a big deal out of this movie? I don’t recall such a fuss being made over the movie “Once were warriors” (If you have’nt seen it, watch it) Sexual abuse happens, it’s a reality that won’t go away because it’s not confronted. Survivors are younger than Dakota Fanning.

First of all I have a problem with a TWELVE year old kid saying “My parents are supportive of anything I choose to do” This LITTLE girl obviously has a problem with fantasy and reality copying remarks made before by much OLDER actresses…Can someone please tell her that she is TWELVE and her parents need a reality check also ..OH I forgot they like the cks she brings home too much!!!!! I am sure she is a nice KID but its sad of the way she has been used…

I think that it is low for people to even mention this as being a controvertial topic. I think Dakota F. has a stupid name but i think i sould be in this movie.

I watched this episode of extra with my best friend who was raped at the age of ten. After this segment I looked at her and ask her what she thought. She just smiled and said that she thinks that Dakota is a smart little girl. Yes she is young but she’s been in films that have affected many people and showing that she has the strength and brains to see the good in the negative scene that I camend her. Many children have been raped and its sad but we can’t try and sugar coat the road to recovery and make it seem easy. Maybe people wont agree with me but thats okay.

Dakota Fanning is already more mature than most actresses twice her age. She is even more mature than many TV gossip reporters. Does anyone REALLY think that anyone has taken advantage of her? I think she knows exactly which roles are right for her.
