You Tell Us: Is the Sex Abuse Plot Too Much for 12-Year-Old Dakota?

Dakota Fanning’s shocking and disturbing new role in the controversial movie “Hound Dog” is shaking up the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which stars Fanning and Robin Wright Penn, has everyone talking, as the 12-year-old big screen darling portrays a young child who survives her father’s sexual abuse.

We joined Dakota at the film fest in Park City, where the young starlet blasted her critics over their reaction to a controversial rape scene.

“Not once while we were filming or reading the script did anyone think it was controversial,” Fanning told “Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli. “I still don’t.”

The rape scene creating so much furor contains no nudity, but eludes to it with quick edits as a bare shouldered Dakota yells “Stop it!” and stares blankly into the sky.

“It's not anything like what they've been saying,” Dakota dished. “It's just been so blown out of proportion.”

Dakota also told “Extra” that not only are her parents okay with the so-called controversial movie, “They’re very supportive of anything that I choose to do.”

As for what drew her to “Hound Dog,” Fanning revealed, “I could just relate to her so much and her depth, and all the layers to her. And I just wanted to discover those.”

The young superstar, who has grown up on the big screen before our very eyes, also revealed that she chose the role hoping to become an inspiration for young victims of abuse.

“They can learn that even though you are born into hard times or you go through hardships, you can still survive,” she said.

Now that Dakota has shared her side of the controversy surrounding “Hound Dog,” “Extra” wants to hear your thoughts!

Is the 12-year-old star’s sex scene too much? We’ll voice your opinions on Thursday’s show!

Most of you are too old to remember Brooke Shields in “Pretty Baby” 1978 movie. She plays a little girl growing up in a brothel and they present her to the highest bidder when she turns 12. This was very controversial almost 30years ago and she even is nude in a shot. I think this new movie should be aloud to tell the story. Things seem to be going backwards for movie people that just want to tell the story.

I am a mother and I do not see anything wrong with the dakota in this film. she is by far mature enough to handle this movie——plus the fact that she is out there enough maybe her being in this movie will help other children in the same situation. I do not see dakota as an 12 y/o child I see have older and wiser beyond her years her only problem is that she was only born 12 years ago

I do not think it is too much. In the movie Bastard out of Carolina Jena Malone was raped and abused over and over again by the character who played her step-dad. She was only 11 or 12 when the movie came out. There wasn’t this sort of controversy for that movie. Dakota is a fantastic actress and so mature for her age that it shouldn’t be a problem.

I think this is the worst thing I have ever seen what is the point of showing alittle girl being raped is that all the talent that the writers have for this movie has. I also think the parents of this child should go to jail who would allow there child alittle girl to be raped fake or not. This movie should be stopped this is a bad time for little girls all over the world with being raped and we go and stage one. And to think we are in Iraq to show them how to live. I bet you any amount of money you want see them putting one of there children in that crap. Good job america Im proud of you.

TO GET THE STORY OUT ABOUT CHILD ABUSE, YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO USE A CHILD. IT’S NOT REALISTIC TO USE A 20 YEAR OLD, NOW IS IT??? IF DAKOTA DOESN’T HAVE A PROBLEM REPRESENTING THE HORRIBLE THINGS A CHILD GOES THROUGH WITH CHILD ABUSE, THEN WHERE IS THE PROBLEM…

The roles an actress plays should be up to the actress. If Dakota Fanning has no problem in the way she has been portrayed and she fully understands the situation, then more power to her. I’m glad her parents are standing behind her on this, she is a very mature 12 year old, and she has proven that she is capable of handling any role.

We think Dakota is a very mature actress, especially for her age. She has proven her self in many other films and in her speeches and daily life. She is right for this part because she can handle it, when it is true that most 12 year olds could not.

There is no real rape going on in the movie. So chill.

And she should be able to choose her movies to some extent. If her parents picked all her movies then she might not want to act. It’s her hobbie, her talent, and therefore as much her choice as possible at such a young age.

And we like her name too. And Carrie Underwood. Katharine McPhee. They have cool names too.

Once again, the movie industry continues to corrupt the morals of the younger generation with their disgusting movies which just about squeeze under the topic of what is pornographic. The producers and everyone who is connected with this movie should all be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There is nothing different in the contents of this movie than what other child molesters are prosicuted for just having ownership to other child pornographic movies on their computers. I hope the law thoroughly investigates this sad, sic movie and prosicutes all involved with its’ production, including the parants. Shame on you Mr. and Mrs. Fanning for subjecting this once innocent child to perform in this sic movie. All your interested in is how much money your child can earn and provide you with. You and all involved in this sic movie will eventually burn in HELL for your involvement. And EXTRA should also be ashamed for your comments about Dakota defense of the movie that quote” Those are strong words of maturity”. This is only a child who is parroting what she has been coached to say. Get real EXTRA. Mark my words, this child is going to end up just like Drew Barrymore and enter a life of drugs, alcohol and sex. What a shame.

okay i think people are being dumb and who ever said that dakota is a bad actress needs to shut up and open there eyes cus she has more talent then some adults out there and if these people think that this movie (where no nudity is shown at all) is racy then maybe they should take off there turtle necks and get out of there house and live a little.

I am very pleased to see that both Dakota and her parents support her in her decision to take on such a difficult role. The reallity is that all over the world many children are sexually abused on a daily basis. People, especially family members of abuse victims tend to blame the victim instead of the sick individuals who prey on their innocent victims. Everyone seems to want to keep this topic quiet because it’s unpleasant to talk about. Well, if society doesn’t face this disgusting reality, then sexual abuse of minors will continue to go on because the perpetrators know all to well that in many cases the people responsible for protecting their victims do not want to ensure that they are punished. As a survivor of sexual abuse at the hands of my uncle, I know from experience that family members really don’t want to talk about it nor face the abuse that happened. They all want to pretend that it didn’t happen and act as though we come from a picture perfect family. Thanks to Dakota and people like Terri Hatcher, maybe we will be on the road to helping to encourage abuse survivors to come forward until someone is able to help them by reporting the abuse. THIS (SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS) NEEDS TO STOP NOW!!!!! People accept when kids like the young Britney Spears are portrayed in a provocative manner yet when faced with something as horrible as child sexual abuse, suddenly it’s forbidden; it’s taboo. Why is that? WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! This is happening right now in our communities all over the world. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

No, Dakota is an actress and please remember Linda Blair in “The Exorcist” she was 14. She played a hard roll. I just don’t think it needs all this hype. Dakota Fanning is an actress and this is just a roll. No one could play it better if you asked me because Dakota is an amazing actress. I think if she picked the roll and had fun playing it that’s all that matters. This is what I think so thank you.

I think she is way to young to play such a scene, I am wondering what kind of Parents she has to allow this!! 12 years old is 12 years old!! way to young!!!! This world today is bad enough without this young girl playing such a scene! is about the MONEY? makes one wonder!

I think its great that we are finally recognizing that this type of thing does happen. I am proud that a person like Dakota would have enough maturity to take on this role.

Dakota F. mentioned that this would help other children in like situations. The problem with her statement is, what parent would allow their children to even watch a movie where a child is being abused. How does she think this message would reach these ‘children in need” ? I’ll have to wait to pass true judgement on the whole topic until I have seen the movie myself.

I just had to comment. I was abused from about the age of 11 until I didn’t know any different. It amazes me now that I was so ignorant. But people didn’t talk about it then. Its been almost 40 years ago. So I think its very important to keep it out there. Let all the children know that its wrong for a parent or step-parent to touch you inappropriately. You can tell someone and get out of that situation. And although you never forget, you do get to where you don’t think about it every day. Keep up the good work Dakota!

Does anyone remember Brooke Shields in “PRETTY BABY” or Jodie Foster in
“TAXI DRIVER” with Robert DeNiro? Let’s ask THEM for their opinion.

Having a 12 year old child play out a rape scene? Not only could this desensitize the child to the entire subject, but also would create an extremely awkward situation for people watching the film. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the most distasteful things that could ever happen on film. I mean granted it has a rating for a meaning, but thats just pushing the bar a bit too far.
