You Tell Us: Is the Sex Abuse Plot Too Much for 12-Year-Old Dakota?

Dakota Fanning’s shocking and disturbing new role in the controversial movie “Hound Dog” is shaking up the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which stars Fanning and Robin Wright Penn, has everyone talking, as the 12-year-old big screen darling portrays a young child who survives her father’s sexual abuse.

We joined Dakota at the film fest in Park City, where the young starlet blasted her critics over their reaction to a controversial rape scene.

“Not once while we were filming or reading the script did anyone think it was controversial,” Fanning told “Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli. “I still don’t.”

The rape scene creating so much furor contains no nudity, but eludes to it with quick edits as a bare shouldered Dakota yells “Stop it!” and stares blankly into the sky.

“It's not anything like what they've been saying,” Dakota dished. “It's just been so blown out of proportion.”

Dakota also told “Extra” that not only are her parents okay with the so-called controversial movie, “They’re very supportive of anything that I choose to do.”

As for what drew her to “Hound Dog,” Fanning revealed, “I could just relate to her so much and her depth, and all the layers to her. And I just wanted to discover those.”

The young superstar, who has grown up on the big screen before our very eyes, also revealed that she chose the role hoping to become an inspiration for young victims of abuse.

“They can learn that even though you are born into hard times or you go through hardships, you can still survive,” she said.

Now that Dakota has shared her side of the controversy surrounding “Hound Dog,” “Extra” wants to hear your thoughts!

Is the 12-year-old star’s sex scene too much? We’ll voice your opinions on Thursday’s show!

This movie represents whats happening to children around the world. Its a horrible thing, but we cant pretend that this is not happening. Those who critisize the movie should focus their energy in defending an actual child who had been raped. Dakota is an mature actress who can take on this role.

Many people may not know this but many children have older spirits and they are capable of doing this type of a movie..
Dakota seems to be a mature young lady and if her parents support her she should do anything that she thinks will inspire other people!!
DAKOTA YOU’RE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is this movie different from the movie Baster Out Of Carolina? A young girl named Jena Malone played (Bone) who was a being both physically and sexually abused by her mom’s boyfriend.

Baster Out Of Carolina is set in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

The movies was made in 1996- Jena was also a young girl playing the same kinda role Dakota is playing. What is the difference?

I DONT SEE WHAT THE BIG DEAL IS? DAKOTA IS A VERY MATURE ACTRESS, AND I BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE HER AND HER PARENTS DECISION TO MAKE. I WAS MOLESTED AT A YOUNG AGE, AND NEVER TOLD UNTIL IT WAS TO LATE. I THINK IT IS GOOD FOR THE MESSAGE TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT. MANY YOUNG ADULTS ARE TO AFFRAID TO COME FORWARD AND SPEAK IN THIS SITUATION. I THINK DAKOTA GIVES ME PEOPLE HOPE. SHE IS BRILLIANT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

No, I don’t believe that 12 years old (like Dakota) are harmed in any way for playing a character in a movie that is raped or sexually abused.
Portraying a different character is COMPLETELY different then you (the actor) going through whatever your character goes through in the movie. This is what acting and making movies is all about. People are, like Dakota Fanning mentioned, making a big deal for no reason. Dakota Fanning is an amazing, talented young girl and she is wise beyond her years. She will be 13 next month and it is time for her grow up and be in different types of movies. She can’t be doing Dr. Seus movies all her life!
People should look passed the scenes and look for her amazing talented, which is there. People just like to stir up contreversy for no reason!
I haven’t seen Hounddog, but I would love to see the message that comes across which is rape and abuse but also Dakota’s amazing talent.

You go girl, I’m with you(Dakota) when you say ppl go through this at all ages and it could help ppl going through it now or in the past. Some girls are more mature at age 12 then others and can handle issues like this and if she feels she can possibly help others then good for her!!

She looks kind of like Jodie Foster

I think all the media scrutiny about the film would be more damaging to Dakota than the scene itself. It’s like all the media scrutiny these student teacher sex scandals create. The horny teens could probably could care less about psycological harm, but having everyone know about it and being teased about it by your peers would create much more problems.

I dont think that a 12 year old girl should be playing a rape scene or any age girl or women should play. My reason for this is that i was sexualy molested(raped). Its not something to act out or to put in a movie.

We should consider at what age little girls are victims of incest and rape. Wouldn’t that then provide us a look into whether Dakota is too young to portray a victim. I think she’s an insightful and bright young woman who has the confidence and maturity to choose a role like this. As a parent of a victim who was 10 & 11, I applaud her fortitude and grace.

Personally I applaud Dakota and her family for bringing this whole incest stuff into the open and perhaps help some victems.

Of course her parents are not going to disapprove…they are living off of her success. They will continue to let her call the shots of which films she has roles in so that they are able to have a good income Its sad!

I believe a girl of 12 is too young to play a part in which a rape takes place. I do not care if there is no nudity, you dont need that to understand exactly what is happening.

I have not seen the movie, and in all honesty, most of the people I work with have no desire to support such a film and wont.

We work with abused children and I believe that having a 12 year old “play the part of a rape victim” is a terrible idea.

Does anyone remember “Bastard Out of Carolina” starring a 10 or 11 year old girl named Jena Malone? There was a part so disturbing in that abuse movie that I’m still trying to figure out how they ever got that scene approved to print! I have not seen “Hounddog” but I doubt the scene in question is any worse than that. Dakota is an amazingly smart and well-adjusted young star. I’d doubt her parents, and the folks who guide her career, would suddenly steer her wrong and allow her to do something that would damage her psyche.

I haven’t seen the movie, but only heard for the most part about it. And I feel it’s a role that was played by a VERY naturally good actress. And I really don’t think that people realized the real idea of the movie. Maybe they need to focus on the rest of the movie instead of one little part that if you remember ALOT of little girls and boys go through every day in REAL life.. ..

why is this movie such a big deal? She is acting expressing that things like that does happen.Rape scenes are done in alot of movies by many stars and there is no big camotion about those movies so let the girl do what she has to do.

Dakota is very mature for a 12 year old and the sexual abuse sceen was done in very good taste. If Dakota’s mother is okay with the sceen then I believe that the public should be too. Dakota is a veteran when it comes to films and I believe that she would make the right decision for her career.
