You Tell Us: Is the Sex Abuse Plot Too Much for 12-Year-Old Dakota?

Dakota Fanning’s shocking and disturbing new role in the controversial movie “Hound Dog” is shaking up the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which stars Fanning and Robin Wright Penn, has everyone talking, as the 12-year-old big screen darling portrays a young child who survives her father’s sexual abuse.

We joined Dakota at the film fest in Park City, where the young starlet blasted her critics over their reaction to a controversial rape scene.

“Not once while we were filming or reading the script did anyone think it was controversial,” Fanning told “Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli. “I still don’t.”

The rape scene creating so much furor contains no nudity, but eludes to it with quick edits as a bare shouldered Dakota yells “Stop it!” and stares blankly into the sky.

“It's not anything like what they've been saying,” Dakota dished. “It's just been so blown out of proportion.”

Dakota also told “Extra” that not only are her parents okay with the so-called controversial movie, “They’re very supportive of anything that I choose to do.”

As for what drew her to “Hound Dog,” Fanning revealed, “I could just relate to her so much and her depth, and all the layers to her. And I just wanted to discover those.”

The young superstar, who has grown up on the big screen before our very eyes, also revealed that she chose the role hoping to become an inspiration for young victims of abuse.

“They can learn that even though you are born into hard times or you go through hardships, you can still survive,” she said.

Now that Dakota has shared her side of the controversy surrounding “Hound Dog,” “Extra” wants to hear your thoughts!

Is the 12-year-old star’s sex scene too much? We’ll voice your opinions on Thursday’s show!

well never seen film, but who is more responsible , the film maker, the parents , or the people who pay to see the film ,it might be eye candy for the pedo but it educates parents about what really goes on you cant learn by being naive.

I dont think Dakota is mature, shes a young girl! Making her do scenes such as that will only put ideas in her head.

I think that the young lady playing in the role is mature and confident enough to play this role it shouldnt be any twisted minds on this let her make that money and be a great role model for all young females.

Movies can allude to very difficult content without it becoming necessary to portray it. After all, the actual molestation of any child is pure evil. Showing it is not necesary but rather pruient regardless of how “tasteully” it was done, there’s no taste to it at all. It’s reprehensible. What does need to be addressed is how this horrible event affects a child and what should be done to help them and to punish the perpetrator of a terrible crime against innocence that can never again be regained. There is much material that could be developed that would educate about the terrible ramifications of this in a person’s young and adult life. Also educational would be material relating to what teachers, doctors, parents of an abused child’s friends, and other adults might notice to tip them off that the child might be in an abusive situation. Everyone needs to be aware, not play investigator, but be aware of any child they come into contact with who might have symptoms related to abuse. There are many, many cases of people “suspecting” but not trying to do anything at all about it.

It is pure Hollywood greed to present such a scene when it is absolutely not necessary in order to treat the subject fully. The subject is much bigger than the sexual act against a child devastating as that is, much, much bigger and all of the effects can be pirtrayed very well and to everyone’s benefit. Pedophilia is a growing taint in the world, especially in our society and in some of Asia. The last thing that should be done is to allow a film supposedly dedicated to fighting this shameful thing to become graphic in any way.

Fanning’s mother, it said in the material above, was molested as a child. No doubt, this girl wanted to champion her mother’s and all other abused children’s, causes in this matter. A 12-year-old does not really realize, though, nor do many adults apparently, that this scene was not necessary at all. Some of the greatest movies ever made didn’t sink to this level but they greatly impacted our psyches and helped us to take needed action.

I applaud Fanning’s courage and love of her mother and other children who have experienced this terrible thing but I wish her parents had been savvy enough to see the scene was not needed and has put their daughter in a terrible situation that will not help her or children who have been abused. Stalking is possible as is the awful spectre of her image being used in a pronographic manner repeatedly. This was a mistake of ignorance, not of intent for them I am sure. Let us all pray that she escapes any attempt on her person because there is nothing at all we can do now about her image being wrongly used.

I was unaware of the other films mentioned and find them also reprehensible. It simply is not needed but merely a ploy to make money to allow a child to be involved in such material other than an educational film about the horrendous effects and needed legislation and attention to this terrible matter.

Every pedophile out there will be waiting for this to come out on DVD; with sweaty hands anxious to push the pause and repeat buttons on their remote controls for Dakota’s big scene! This movie is not needed for incest or rape awareness - this topic has been done and redone for years. Bottom line: sex sells….and sex WITH a child sells better….it is all about the money and the hell with everything else. No wonder we have such a huge problem with pedophilia. A 12 year old can ACT mature - but it doesn’t MAKE them mature - no one at 12 is mature.

I don’t think that it would have damaging effects on Dakota as long as she knows the difference between the movie and reality, and from what she has said, it seems she does. As the daughter of someone whose mother was repeatedly molested by her father, I believe that the movie will be good, b/c people don’t really understand what can happen behind closed doors, and it may help victims maybe speak up about it. Films like this always walk a thin line, but if done properly, they really can help.

Dakota’s parents and all those behind this movie have put a 12 year old girl in harm’s way. She has now become “eye candy” for every pedophile around the world! It is very possible that some sicko out there may take this to the next level and stalk Dakota for the rest of her life. Any parent that would put their 12 year old in this position should be prosecuted. And it is not “just a movie” to the sick men out there that may want to make this fantasy a reality.

Yes, I saw the scene in Prince of Tide when the little boy was being raped. I thought it was sick. We all know child rape goes on in the world——that doesn’t mean we need to sit there and view it under the guise of “entertainment”. It’s no different than when the Romans used to enjoy sitting there watching the Christians being fed to the lions.

As for Dakota’s parents “supporting” her in everything, I’ve just got to say “ya….just keep those checks rolling in Dakota…”

What kind of brain dead parents lets their 12 year old daughter call all the shots? Just when you think Hollywood can’t sink any lower, they manage to surprise.

Gee, when the little boy was raped in Prince of Tides in 1991, and pretty graphically I might add, I don’t recall the same buzz, the same furor over that. Could it be that a 12 year old Dakota Fanning is ALREADY typecast as the cute little blond all American girl instead of the wonderful actress she is and hopes to be? It’s ok to watch Law and Order SVU’s horrible tales of little children getting kidnapped raped tortured sold murdered… and advertisers pay lots of money for airtime, and we BUY the products, but Fanning and family are lambasted for a movie that she obviously found important enough to ACT in. People are getting pretty kooky about what is okay and what isn’t. Take the moral high ground and if you don’t like it, DON’T WATCH IT. Quietly.

I don’t know why everyone is making such a big deal about this movie. I guess people do not remember A Time To Kill when the little girl who played Samuel L Jackson’s daughter was raped. That scene was hard to take but I think rape is hard at any age…..it is just a movie people. If these people would spend more time on real child endangerment problems this world would be a much better place. This little girl has parents let them make the decision.

It seems like movies are becoming more and more twisted. This would be a pedophiles dream to watch.
Does anyone notice the way Dakota Fanning looks like she’s trying to remember a script while stating she doesn’t feel the movie is controversial? And of course her parents are supportive of her acting! Her hard work is thier profit. She is only 12, after all. They obviously don’t care that child molesters would be thinking of thier child in a sick way. If she were a rational thinking adult who had good morals, children she cared about and was completely removed from the shallowness of Hollywood would she still say the same things?
There is enough trouble in the world today. We have enough sickness in humanity. It’s alright for people to have the facts and be aware of what’s out there. But using such subjects as children, animals, etc. being hurt is not entertainment! If I’m going to pay for a movie I want to be cheered up or educated with the facts of reality!
The more these things are presented to society as “entertainment” instead of educational then the more numb and uncaring we grow to it.

All I have to say is that I’ve never heard so much about a scene in a movie where a child gets sexually assaulted. There are movies where grown men assault children in vivid depictations. Maybe it’s because other movies are made-for-tv or straight-to-video, but if the media is going to make so much out of Dakota’s scene in “Hound Dog,” why not do the same for the movies that are low-profile?

Dakota is not actually raped in the MOVIE…she’s acting it out! Being raped is someone forcing someone else for sexual favors. Hence again … a movie. It sends out the message that child rape does happen in the world and to open our eyes as to what is happenening around the world. It looks like Dakota did an amazing job with the Hounddog.

Get real people. The issue of sexual abuse is out there. We can’t turn a blind eye to it or shame any director or actor for portraying it. What the public needs to realize is that, sheltering children from the truth will only make them unaware. Children need to be warned about sexual predators and know what to do in tough situations. If they are just shielded from reality, the issue will only become worse. Dakota is a very brave girl for standing up to controversy and spreading awareness. Also, I applaud her parents for the support of their talented daughter.
