You Tell Us: Is Isaiah's Apology Enough to Save His Job?

From Rosie on “The View” to “Good Morning America” and “MSNBC,” everyone is buzzing about the controversy on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

On Friday, the first fallout from the controversy occurred, as “Extra” learned Isaiah Washington fired his publicist.

After returning to work on Wednesday, Isaiah began speaking with cast members before issuing this public apology:

“I can no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I’ve asked for help,” he said in a statement.

Now Hollywood is taking sides on “Extra.”

Rex Lee, who plays Jeremy Piven’s gay assistant on “Entourage,” gave his view of the scandal to “Extra.”

“As a gay actor myself, I would hate to find out that one of my co-stars harbored some ill will toward me,” Lee said.

On rocker John Mayer’s blog, he suggested the show’s writers have Isaiah’s character, Dr. Burke, come out as a gay man.

On Thursday afternoon, ABC said Washington’s action were “unacceptable and are being addressed.”

Now, GLAAD President Neil Giuliano tells “Extra” that the embattled actor has agreed to meet with him.

“Hopefully something very good can come out of this,” Giuliano said. “More people will understand that this kind of language is unacceptable, it's offensive.”

So should Isaiah be fired?

The issue is exploding on the “Extra” website, with page after page of your responses.

“Let him go already. Maybe then he will think before he opens his mouth,” said viewer Dixie, while Debbie pointed out, “He has apologized and should be given a second chance.”

However, an overwhelming 90 percent of “Extra” viewers wrote in to say Isaiah should go!

Ellen DeGeneres called “Extra” with this statement about the “Grey’s” scandal:

"In recent times we've seen a lot of people using hateful words... Hopefully this incident will put an end to this, and people will stop using this word and other hateful words."

For now, the man in the middle, T.R. Knight, isn’t talking, as the prognosis for the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” remains uncertain.

Isaac Washington’s behavior was unforgiveable. No amount
of apology could erase his
past actions. He should be
written off the show immediately.

I admire that he is a straight guy in Hollywood. Hateful word are not appropiate but everyone makes mistakes. Gays and lesbians make up less than 2% of the U.S. population. Why are they stirring up so much trouble and getting so much attention! They just need to move on and let the poor guy keep his job.

Personal rights, the right to be, say and do as one pleases. If you wish to be a homosexual you have your rights to do so. But as soon as someone does not agree with your choice they lose their rights to their opinion. If they do not agree with your lifestyle then you, and those who live this lifestyle as well as those who agree with you, feel the other person MUST change their opinions so not to offend you, helping you to feel better about the choices you have made. What is going on here? This is truly out of control! You want YOUR rights yet you are not allowing this actor to have his rights. Making it look as if Will Isaiah needs to search his heart and soul regarding his opinion. His employment is on the line just to sooth your personal feelings. Also Will Isaiah, or any other actor for that matter, should NOT be forced to play the part of a homosexual just to appease your pride.

I personally do not have any problems with gay men or women. With that said, I do not believe a person should be punished or fired for expressing an opinion. Perhaps, Washington should examine his choice of words, but again I would be agianst his termination. Clearly the actors all need to work through this problem.

I am surprised that Washington used a television appearance to apparently repeat the word. I consider Washington to be an outstanding actor and would hate to see him leave the show. Unfortunitely, I believe that if Washington was white, he would already be gone.

Good luck to all the cast members so that we can keep this great show on the air.

This ALL is so freaking sad!

Our nation has become left wing crazy with political correctness, this whole things now has begun to seemingly stink of a gay-backed conspiracy to again try and mainstream that entire community’s needs to be deemed worthy of “special societal and social interpretation”.

To each his own, but again I’d like to offer, “Who didn’t know or see from the very first episodes that this little annoying neurotic impish whelp was gay?”

Again, T.R Knight has and is acting as if he’s been surprised by the exposure of a revelation he wasn’t aware of; in a totally gutless manner, he’s sitting back and allowing this mess to spin further upward and out of all reasonableness until it will cost what is a good show “WITH Washington’s presence and inclusion” possibly a loss in viewerships because everyone will so sick of this mess.

Again shame on ABC and Sondra Rhymes for allowing this mess to get to this point.

Mr. Washington is allowed in America to have, hold and voice his values about whatever as has Michael Richards, Mel Gibson, Jimmy the Greek, Paul “Bear” Bryant and I’m sure many of the folks currently working at ABC do on a daily basis about any and everyone.

He’s GAY it’s his CHOICE, but he seems remorseful and regarding of his CHOICE as ignominious and forced upon him so he fighting back primarily thru the voices and platforms of power lesbians and soon the director of Glaad, pleeeeeeeeease!

This is ALL at a point now where T.R Knight should be called on to the carpet for his culpability in the manipulations of the public by and for the agendas of the homosexual community to again try and have the public at large treat and interpret their community as being special.

The guys involved with the Michael Richards incident couldn’t help being black, T.R. Knight can choose not to lay down with men and Mr. Washington regardless has a right to have a voice to voice his values, standards, morals and beliefs and he should not be fired from his job!

Definitely Not. He should keep his job. Everyone is asking for ABC to fire Isaiah Washington. That as a network they should set the example. In that case fire Rosie O’Donnell as well. I love her work but if ABC says that they don’t tolerate such behavior then “practice what you preach”. When Rosie insulted Asians I didn’t see any media(ex: Extra, Access Hollywood, The Insider…) doing has much coverage as they are doing on this. Be fair is all I ask. The last time I remember we are entitled to speak our minds. It’s a little thing called Freedom of Speech.

Isaiah SHOULD NOT BE FIRED. Grow up people, this is not a court of law. It is Hollywood’s publicity mill. Look what it did to the View! You would never think that two people calling each other Fat, loser, and immoral would end up in higher ratings. We are a sick society because we feed off this type of garbage.

FIRE HIM IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely think he should be fired.
If it were any other group that he insulted so blantantly, there would be no question. There would be outrage. We should stop turning a blind eye to discrimination against gays and lesbians and do the right thing. Stand up and show that you will no longer take this kind of nonsense. T.R. Knight deserves this injustice to stop immediately. If Isaiah is allowed to continue like nothing happened, what does that teach other gay bashers?
I think Isaiah should be fired and probably should have been fired long ago. How would he feel if TR Knight called him the “N” word???? This is just as damaging as that and should NOT be tolerated!! He has apparently had problems in the past on other sets, he obviously thinks he can do no wrong and it needs to be stopped. The apology is too little too late!!

As a gay man I strongly believe that people should be free to be themselves no matter what. Although I can’t stand Isaiah and wouldn’t mind seeing him go - it wouldn’t be fair. Just as I feel that the jerk from Seinfeld should be dismissed. They’re both racists jerks but they both are free to think the way they do. People might claim these are two different situations but I believe the situation and the people are one and the same.

Washington should experience some consequences for his actions. Not only was his offensive behavior a bad reflection on the show(his employer) TWICE, but he has proven himself to be a liar in front of the world now that the mainstream media has picked it up.

As all actors and sports players are role models (to the younger generation especially), they should be accountable for their actions. Isaiah should be fired. If we the public continue to accept such behavior what are we saying to our children? Isaiah should no more be prejudice against TR than one would be against Isaiah. PREJUDICE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. We need to make that clear. We need to show these over paid actors and athletes that they are replaceable.

Isaiah deserves another chance! I, for one, would REALLY miss his character if he left. Dr. Burke is an “intregal” part of this show. Isaiah deserves a chance to make amends. WE ALL deserve the chance to make amends for our mistakes. “Let he who is without fault, or sin, or mistake…. CAST THE FIRST STONE.” He’s a great actor, and HE DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE! WE LOVE YOU ISAIAH! HANG IN THERE!!!!!

Why do people have to pretend to accept lifestyles that are not in line with their own. He’s an actor and he’s entitled to his opinion like every other person on this earth. People have let their true feelings be known for a variety of things in this country and it has not had an adverse affect on their livlihood. Perhaps Rosie and Ellen should not get so much attention when they start spouting off about people not accepting them living with women and adopting children and so on an so forth. Just as they have the right to live the way they choose, others have the right to say and believe what they believe. Isn’t that what people are dying over—-freedom?

More good will come from Isaiah & TR getting through this together & moving on than destroying a man’s career over this incident. I’m hoping Isaiah is sorry that he hurt TR by using that word just as Isaiah would have been hurt had TR used the N word. But he should NOT have his job taken away, his career destroyed over this. There is a chance for healing here. I hope they take it and I hope we can all support them in the healing. If TR can forgive him then we should support that. I send them both good wishes.

I started to read the comments for about 2 seconds and then stopped. I want to write in my initial gut level response before I read the other responses and change my mind.lol My first thought is that sometimes it seems that we go straight for the juggler. I think the intial slap on the hand for the first offense and you’ve been warned would be fair.
A little forgiveness and compassion might help change people for the better. O.K. I’ll try to read a few comments:)

Everyone keeps saying the same thing. What would happen if someone told Isaiah the “N” word. They keep Bringing up the Michael Richards incident. His use of the N word was not as insulting as some have said. What was so offensive about Mr. Richards comment was about the lynching part and how 50 years ago he would have had a fork up his a$$… Honestly there is a difference being the F word as oppose to the N word. There is so much history/hate behind that word. How many people have been killed just for being gay? Now how many people have been killed for the color of their skin? It wasn’t until the 1960’s that African-Americans felt safer for having the “wrong color”. As a white woman I do not see anything wrong with Mr. washington’s comments. Everyone is trying to play the race card but African-Americans would win hands on. Even today African-Americans still are discriminated. When have you heard of someone being stopped for driving while gay. Never heard of such a thing. But I have definitely heard of being stopped for driving while black. Keep up the good work Isaiah Washington and I support you 100%. Much love,
Kellie

The only reason that Isaiah Washington is apologizing I believe, is because if he didn’t come out & apologize I think he knew that there would be a chance he might be fired over his comments about T.R. Knight who I happen to know personally because we went to high school together & I know that T.R. is an honest man. I think Isaiah Washington is just trying to cover his butt. I find it amazing that an african man would use derogatory language & offensive slurs to speak of another human being. I can only assume that at some point in his life he was exposed to some form of racial slurs & I would think this would make a person extra sensitive to how painful & damaging such words can be. I do think that Isaiah Washington shoud not be fired though. Every one deserves a second chance.
I was reading some other comments & I noticed one writen by a woman named Linda stating that she liked T.R. better before he came out. Saying that T.R. Knights character is hetrosexual & now that she knows that he is not it just makes his character less believeable. Well I say that’s bull!! I say that just makes T.R. Knight a even better actor. She said whatever happened to “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” Well it sounds like somebody else has got some issues within their own soul to work out
