You Tell Us: Is Isaiah's Apology Enough to Save His Job?

From Rosie on “The View” to “Good Morning America” and “MSNBC,” everyone is buzzing about the controversy on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

On Friday, the first fallout from the controversy occurred, as “Extra” learned Isaiah Washington fired his publicist.

After returning to work on Wednesday, Isaiah began speaking with cast members before issuing this public apology:

“I can no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I’ve asked for help,” he said in a statement.

Now Hollywood is taking sides on “Extra.”

Rex Lee, who plays Jeremy Piven’s gay assistant on “Entourage,” gave his view of the scandal to “Extra.”

“As a gay actor myself, I would hate to find out that one of my co-stars harbored some ill will toward me,” Lee said.

On rocker John Mayer’s blog, he suggested the show’s writers have Isaiah’s character, Dr. Burke, come out as a gay man.

On Thursday afternoon, ABC said Washington’s action were “unacceptable and are being addressed.”

Now, GLAAD President Neil Giuliano tells “Extra” that the embattled actor has agreed to meet with him.

“Hopefully something very good can come out of this,” Giuliano said. “More people will understand that this kind of language is unacceptable, it's offensive.”

So should Isaiah be fired?

The issue is exploding on the “Extra” website, with page after page of your responses.

“Let him go already. Maybe then he will think before he opens his mouth,” said viewer Dixie, while Debbie pointed out, “He has apologized and should be given a second chance.”

However, an overwhelming 90 percent of “Extra” viewers wrote in to say Isaiah should go!

Ellen DeGeneres called “Extra” with this statement about the “Grey’s” scandal:

"In recent times we've seen a lot of people using hateful words... Hopefully this incident will put an end to this, and people will stop using this word and other hateful words."

For now, the man in the middle, T.R. Knight, isn’t talking, as the prognosis for the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” remains uncertain.

I believe this entire issue with Isaiah Washington has been blown out of porportion. LEAVE HIM BE!!!!! HE HAS APOLOGIZED!!!!! WHAT MORE DOES ANYONE WANT????? The people who are judging him have no right to - Only God can do that and even He does not Judge us. Isaiah SHOULD NOT BE FIRED OVER SOMETHING SO PETTY - SO WHAT IF HE SAID WHAT HE SAID - I’M SURE HE HAS HEARD HIS SHARE OF RACIAL EPITAPHS AND HAS NOT GONE RUNNING HOME CRYING TO “MOMMY”. DEAL WITH IT PEOPLE!!!!!! IF Isaiah goes - you can count at least myself and 20 (and counting) of my good friends that will not tune in to Greys Anatomy.

Isaiah Washington is an excellent actor and performer. Obviously he can be overly verbal and reactive at times. So he made a mistake, twice. Perhaps anger management would help - have him call Jack Nicholsen!! HA!! I think Grey’s Anatomy is making a mistake by letting him go. This may be the beginning of the end of this entertaining and thoughtful series. Remember the divide and conquer attitude? Chaos in all forms is a much maligned attitude these days. We must stand up to the circuitous manner in which CHAOS takes hold. We must be supportive of each other and those that make mistakes, afro-americans, gays, asians and caucasians. We are HUMAN BEINGS not robots. By our very nature, we learn through our mistakes. We are not Perfect. These attitudes that support political correctness & perfectionism is a hop skip and a jump from the fascism/Nazi way of thinking. I find this SERIOUS considering that we all know actors carry different degrees of baggage. Progress not perfection. I am not a black person nor am I in the entertainment business- However, I believe in humanity and in second chances. Let’s mature in our decision making abilities studio executives.

It would be a huge mistake to release Mr. Washington from his current role and this program. He made a mistake, he was wrong, and has apologized for it more than once. He does not deserve to have his career jeopardized. Roles portraying Blacks, especially black men are few and far between. Hollywood has never been quick to create such opportunities for black actors. It was refreshing to see a black actor who is an educated, dignified professional person. I can’t imagine another person in show business has not crossed this line of making inappropriate comments. His character has been eroding for some time and has gone from being considered for the next surgical chief, to being shot and grievously injured, and now just walking away. This seems to be a convenient excuse to rid the show and the airways of such a potentially positive example for anyone. It should be written into the script that his character misses a few shows if further retribution is necessary. However, the larger picture should be kept in mind. It will be yet another great disappoint for his character to be so abruptly removed to many viewers. This is yet another example of the shoddy treatment of minority performers. For example, how many times have we seen shows featuring minority casts being aired at unpopular viewing times and then cancelled for producing too few viewers. While you see unpopular shows featuring white casts being moved to better time slots or nights until they find an audience. Or, consider beloved characters suddenly and inexplicably killed. I hope the network will not replace him with a minority actor who is a criminal, a drug addict or has some other shortcoming, as usual. Thank you.

I thought that this was still a free country and that people were allowed to have opinions even if they don’t agree with others. I don’t want people to be hurtful, but neither do I want people to have “give in and adjust” because it is politically proper. Somewhere along the way we ahve been brainwashed that the gay life-style is okay and that God made them that way. Hogwash! If God did that why would he say that it was a sin and we woulod be punished in eternity? So go ahead and love the person but please don’t tell us to love the sin. Mr. Washington, good luck and I support your staying on the show.

If people were fired or sent to rehab for saying things they shouldn’t; most of us would be unemployed and in rehab. Not to mention the majority of people using the “N” word. And if Hollywood is going to send Isiah Washington to rehab, all the writers who pen the “N” word in scripts should go. And to those who commented that if a white man had made a racial slur he would have been fired…when? I doubt if people are going stop watching Seinfeld reruns or seeing Mel Gibson’s movies or any other movies based on how non-whites are treated. Makes you want to go hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Entering rehab for bigotry? Ha, ha, ha. If that weren’t so pathetic it would be comical. These Hollywood bubble heads. Life is just a series of 30-day rehab stints for them… and then like magic, they’re cured! By “hiding” in a rehab center until the storm blows over they actually marginalize the idea of rehab. Do you think they ever realize that most level-headed REAL people just laugh out loud at this kind of behavior? It’s just “Rehab-to-go” for them. Fart too much? Enter rehab. Drive like a doberman pinscher? Enter rehab. Abusive to others? Enter rehab. What buffoons. Of course Washington should be fired. It shouldn’t even be a question. Downplaying the incident is ignorant and a disgrace and a patheic reflection our society’s amoral, unethical, degradation and dumbing down. As Shonda Rimes noted, Washongton’s behavior IS an affront to ALL people who walk around every day struggling to be respected whether they are black, Hispanic, disabled, overweight, etc.

I think it is VERY interesting that all of this is being so glossed over. What do you think Isaiah would do if it was one of his fellow castmates who made a “racial” slur instead of his “gay” slur????
What do you think the whole black community would do?
Do you think they would just “let it go with an apology?
Why is this any different???

Isaiah Washington needs to go! There is enough hatred , stereotyping, and descimination in the world toward people who don’t fit the cookie-cutter mold of the “typical” American. Some people are so small minded and can’t handle others who follow their heart and go against the grain. As if once wasn’t enough, Isaiah had to ruin a wonderful moment for the rest of the cast, by bringing up a sour moment on national tv, which I happened to be watching with my two pre-teen children! I don’t want my children to be influenced by Isaiah’s derogatory, and descriminatory opinions. He’s a terrible role-model for my children as well as his own!

My God, what are we coming to? “He without sin, cast the first stone.” I don’t know what was said or happened on the set of Grey’s but I’m just wondering…what would have happened if Mr. Washington had just said that Mr. Knight was “gay” instead of using the word “fagot”? Would that be cause to fire him? As far as Mr. Washington’s use of that word causing Mr. Knight to “come out”…I don’t think so, we all have choices and he chose to “come out”..he could have “stayed in” who really cares…it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I have been called many names by many different people in my lifetime and because I know who and what I am, what people say or think about me personally doesn’t cause me any anxiety or to loose any sleep. If we all take a look in the mirror…we would not be so quick to “judge”. I view television for entertainment and to keep up with what’s going on in the world, but lately…I’m just disgusted. A few people are acting like they have the right to impose their thoughts, beliefs and “views” on others. Grow up people…this is a free nation and sometimes things are going to be said and done that we each don’t like or agree with…it is called “personal preferences/beliefs” or whatever…and they are just that…most of the time they only matter to the person who’s “penning the opinion” unless we decide to take those opinions as “personal” what value do the opinions have except to the author. People, life is too short…lets “forgive more and judge less”. Even though it is hard because we are human—sometimes you just have to keep silent or ignore certain things and there would be no feeding frenzy to “blow things way out of proportion”. Just in case anyone takes this personal, please don’t..it’s just my thoughts/opinions and they don’t affect you unless you choose to let them….this is still a free country…but if we keep going the way we are now…it won’t be for long!!!!!

Correction:

My last comment should have stated: “The show without Washington would be difficult to watch. Not only would we miss the character, but everytime we see “George” we are going to think of him as the reason Washington is gone - even if that is not the case.”

Leave him alone! Actors are still human and make mistakes. Unfortunately their mistakes are publicized, manipulated, and drawn out by the media. So harmful slurs cut a little deeper because they are replayed and reaired over and over!!! Who knows what Washington has been dealing with since the first incident and while he may not have been the victim, he seems to need some help. If he, T.R., and the cast are fine - let’s go on with the show. All this dabbling into their personal lives and sexual preferences is making it hard to believe the characters (i.e. George’s relationships). Please, let’s move on. It’s taking away from the show. If we all love the show so much, we should let the two people make ammends. The show with Washington would be difficult to watch. Not only would we miss the character, but everytime we see “George” we are going to think of him as the reason Washington is gone - even if that is not the case.

I am so tired of all of this gay and lesbian BS. they are too open with this junk anyway. Our children are confused enough as it is in this society. that gay and lesbian stuff is not normal and you know it.
Isaiah i got your back, a lot of people feel the same way but won’t say anything and I believe some want him fired because he is a fine fine black man.
Let this go and move on. Better yet Isaiah go ahead and let them fire you and then sue the he## out of all of them.
He is human he said something that was on his mind that does not make him a bad person that needs to lose his job
I don’t believe he needs to see any counselor either. Now if he was gay then yea he would need to see one to find out why he is attracted to men.
do not fire him for what. move on

I THINK THEY ALL NEED TO LEAVE THE MAN ALONE. HE HAS THE RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND HE DID APOLOGIZE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. ALL OF YOU WHO SAY FIRE HIM LET HIM WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE.
IF THE GUY DID NOT WANT DO DEAL WITH THINGS SUCH AS THIS THEN HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS GAY SELF IN THE CLOSET.
I WILL SAY THIS IF ISAIAH GETS FIRED I WILL NO LONGER WATCH THE SHOW. BLACK PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH MUCH MORE THAN THAT FOR YEARS AND STILL SURVIVED.
LET THE MESS GO AND LEAVE HIM ALONE.

NO! Fire him - he was given a chance to let it go away - but he couldn’t leave it alone and that is probably a worse move than what he said. He will lose show watchers and drag down my feelings about the show. You do not need him in it.

It’s like ‘Sally’ told ‘Harry’-“You can’t take it back, it’s already out there!” He spoke what he felt, he said what he meant, and he has shown us his true colors over and over again, not that there’s anything wrong with that but it’s not like it’s ever going to be forgotten, so you best leave. Don’t let the door…

YES it is. Name calling has been a part of everybody’s life for ever, it is not right, but if Jesus can die on the cross to forgive us our sins why can’t we forgive him? After all, he did not kill anyone.
