George Clooney and Friends Unite for Operation Darfur

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are just a few of the stars who are uniting to stop the crisis in Darfur. Clooney and his father took “Extra” on a journey to the border of Chad and Darfur.

“My father and I thought we'd come over and take a look for ourselves,” Clooney said.

The horrors that the Clooney men found are ones that stars like Brad, Angelina Jolie, Maria Bello and “Hotel Rwanda” star Don Cheadle are all too familiar with.

“There is a systematic attempt to eradicate an entire population of people,” Cheadle explained.

Those people are black Africans who are hunted by Arab militias armed by the Sudanese government.

“After the Holocaust, the word was never again,” Bello said. “And here it is; we're in the midst of another genocide, and we're letting it happen.”

“We found a village called Jacque, with over 1,000 displaced families,” Clooney said. “These people had jobs and property before the Arab militia burned their villages, raped their women and killed their children."

With a population on the brink of extinction, a growing list of celebrities are trying to shine their light on Darfur, including Pitt and Jolie, who were involved in producing “God Grew Tired of Us,” the story of the Lost Boys of Sudan.

“This is one story among millions... millions... of people that are running for their lives,” Pitt told “Extra” at the film’s premiere.

“It's a reminder that there are 20 million refugees around the world and the situation in Darfur is getting worse everyday,” Jolie added.

Bello recently made the issue into a fashion statement at the Critics Choice Awards, wearing a jewel-encrusted dress with “Peace in Darfur” embellished across her back.

“I thought what the heck, it’s my little voice, but there it is,” she said of her decision. “If it could get one person, one person to go to the Internet and educate themselves and write one letter to a congressman, then I think it's done its job.”

“What we cannot do is turn our heads and look away, and hope that this will somehow disappear,” Clooney preached. “Because if we do, they will; they will disappear and an entire generation of people will be gone.”

Getting the ‘Brass’ at the awards show to donate money to the Darfur cause instead of spending on lavish gifts is the first good and positive, and doable thing I’ve heard. SO - how about it George, Brad, Angelina, and all the rest??? What concrete things can you do to hustle the ‘Brass’ to redirect their money to something needed instead of something wasted?? And how much time will it take you to do just that? While we wait for your answer, more innocent people are being wiped off the face of the earth!

actually George Clooney and his father went in Chad (the country was in the midst of a coup at that time) AND in Soudan. And if they didn’t go in Darfur, it’s because they couldn’t: armed people prevented them from going there.

NONE of the people mentioned here - clooney - cheadle - pitt- or jolie have ever been to sudan or to darfur - clooney went to the refugee camps in Chad - along the darfur border - just want to correct what is an oft repeated mistake - as for God Grew Tired of Us - it is a excellent documentary about the refugees from the civil war in Southern Sudan - not Darfur - The “Lost Boys” were by and large christians and animists displaced by the civil war ( since resolved with a peace treaty) between the north ( where Darfur is located) and the south - just a few facts !!

There are many terrible things happening to others and it’s great to see some help them, but how can I?

All “we” in america have to do is to get 1(one) million black americans to volunteer to go to Dafur, with arms, and to guard the poor people now in need.
Let’s see the black community step op to the plate and help their fellow man.

I just saw the special on extra, concerning the situation in Dafur and you can’t help but feel that pain if your human.

I’m glad and encouraged as a black man that some people in Hollywood are not to proud to show their humanity.

I can’t offer funds directly, but I can offer my ideas. I’m trying to introduce a hat with fiber-optic lights on it.

We could create a Peace In Dfur Hat, with these fiber-optic lights to shed “LIGHT” on their plight in that country. And I would donate all proceeds to the effort.

If any one else likes this idea and would like to see samples, and can help fund this project, Im at aeenterprize7@sbcglobal.net

There is a sad history in Darfur. Going back to pre slave time {15c}, Arabs were killing and enslaving Darfur people
and raped their women.
if this has been going on for more than 5 hundred years, what can we do?

George wants us out of Iraq because our young men and women are being killed. Yet Saddam has commited genocide/murdered thousands. But it will be alright for our young men and women to be killed in Darfur. My wife and I are confused. Whats the difference?

Some people in the U.S. have hard times, may be homeless and without food but they can get help. Americans don’t face the worry of being burned out, raped, shot down and being irradicated. We are all one family, in one world, created by One Father,God. As His children we must do everything possible to help our brothers and sisters in Darfur. Carol in Atlanta

I agree with Stephen above and the Usa, we have so many pockets of poverty and desparate need here in the USA, and of course it is so much worse because of the disparity between the classes.
I also feel strongly that our country should redirect the monies being spent in wars and violance and concentrate on saving human lives, especially when it involves millions and genocide is so easily apparent.
If anyone should come to their aid, it is the Jews who have been there and so very recently.

Maybe if someone of the might of George Clooney or Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt banded together and asked “The Brass” at the awards show to donate to Darfur instead of giving away lavish gifts to presenters who don’t need them, then a lot of money would be used wisely.

Once again I am heartbroken over Darfur and uplifted by George Clooney et al regarding their committment to changing the situation there. Maybe if someone of the might of George Clooney or Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt banded together and asked “The Brass” at the awards show to donate to Darfur instead of giving away lavish gifts to presenters who don’t need them, then a lot of money would be used wisely.

This is a true example of what can be accomplished when people get together to help others. I applaud all the celebs for using their voice to bring this issue to the front of our awareness.

What I don’t understand is why don’t more celebs get together and take care of the USA. There are so many issues pertaining to poverty, illness and homelessness. Everyone has a choice, and I respect that, but why not at home first. We spend soooo much money in so many different countries, yet we don’t take care of the issues at home.

I’M LEARNING ALL I CAN TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST GENOCID IN DARFUR. I’LL DO WHATEVER I CAN TO ALERT EVERYONE TO WHAT’S GOING ON THERE SO WE CAN PUT AN END TO IT.

I am very concerned about the situation in Darfur. I am a special education teacher assistant and would like to know more about what we could do as a school to help these people.
