'Dreamgirls' Scores 8 Oscar Nods; Shut Out of Best Picture Category

The "Dreamgirls" dream team led the Oscar pack on Tuesday, with eight nominations, but surprisingly, the film was shut out of the Best Picture category after being considered a potential frontrunner.

"Babel" tailed close behind with seven nods, including a Best Picture nomination and acting nods for newcomers Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi.

Also scoring Best Picture nominations were "The Departed, "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Queen."

Helen Mirren nabbed a nod for "The Queen," while Golden Globe winner Forest Whitaker was nominated for "The Last King of Scotland."

"Dreamgirls" stand-outs, and Golden Globe winners, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were nominated in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.

Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress for her role as a demonic and overly demanding boss in "The Devil Wears Prada," which marked her 14th Oscar nomination and made her the most nominated actor of all time.

Joining Mirren and Streep in the Best Actress category are Penélope Cruz for "Volver," Judi Dench in "Notes on a Scandal" and Kate Winslet for "Little Children."

Best Actor nominees included Leonardo DiCaprio for "Blood Diamond," Ryan Gosling for "Half Nelson," Peter O'Toole in "Venus" and Will Smith for "The Pursuit of Happyness."

In the Best Director category, many speculate this may be the year for perennial loser Martin Scorsese, who is tied with four other directors for the record of five nominations and no wins.

Scorsese is surely hopeful "The Departed" will break his losing streak.

NEXT: And the Oscar Nominees Are...

I wanted to ask about Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible3. I Really liked it! All the characters kept you interested. Well made in every respect. With all the oscars/catagories was there any for this movie? Even if people didn’t agree with Tom, his ways. This isn’t supposed to be about him, but about the movie in which He did a really great job . They all did!

It is obvious that the academy must have been in a “dreamworld” not to nominate “Dreamgirls” for best picture. Ask yourself one simple question. When was the last time you went to the theatre to see a film, and the audience stood to their feet accompanied by applause? In most of our lifetime’s, never. This was the case for “Dreamgirls”. I have seen the movie four times at the theatre and I can’t get enough. Jennifer is a godsend. The angels that rest in her voicebox must have been handpicked by God himself considering the large goosebumps that protrude off of my skin when she sings. Congrats anyhow for the nominations that this film did get. We all know what the best film of the year is. It doesn’t take the academy to validate that either…

I was outraged that Dreemgirls didn’t get a Best Director or Best Picture nod. What’s with the members of the Academy of Motion picture Arts & Sciences?

Do they not notice a very well made MUSICAL/Movie when they see it? Academy, it’s ovbious that you guys don’t want to see DREAMGIRLS get the recognition it truly deserves.
