I just moved to South Beach Miami from a different country and although it is a great place it is also a disgustingly plastic and racist place. I am black from Africa and happen to prefer clubs that play house music and generally classier clubs such as Set and Mokai but I have already experienced racism from these two clubs thrice where they will not let me in when I show up with a group of about three to four black girls (because apparently that means we are from the American ghetto!) and they only let me in if I am the only black in a group of caucasians. I am well educated and travelled and I am very good looking too and this absolutely appals me because I am not used to such kind of treatment where I come from! However it motivates me to work harder and achieve a lot more because then they will beg me to come and grace their clubs.

Diane Borger brings back some nice memories. I had my very own Club Z card! (still have it). It was at 1235 Washington which is Mansion now. Club Z was the tops for its sheer size and dance floor. I saw Grace Jones and Divine there. Both arrived fashionably late and played for maybe 30-45 minutes which was a big disappointment. South Beach was starting to revitalize and it was fun to be a part of that. Of course, it was easier to be fashionable when you followed the likes of Cyndi Lauper. Today it requires a lot more plastic surgery. Anyway, they’ve totally remade Mansion and did a fantastic job, but for me, will never be as fun as those early days when you felt the Club belonged to You and You alone.

You all think you really know the history of South Beach. Well I grew up in Miami, and was part of what south beach is today. It used to be a broken down Art Deco District that housed Senior Citezens. The first big club that made south beach was CLUB Z. It was on washington st. one block from the beach. We hosted guests such as Prince, Grace Jones, Tina Tuner (who by the way is a wonderful woman)The list goes on. I was the GM. We also had a Club Z in Ft. Lauderdale. But south beach the stories I could tell you. Then Club NU, The China Club, it just kept getting bigger. Yet some how it lost somthing along the way. I have never been able to put my finger on it. I remember when the MIAMI SOUND MACHINE played in our lobby bar. You see we were a 3 story Night club. I bet Gloria Estefon would remember those days. I guess you could say it lost a certain Charm. I had a place on the beach, the Palace on Brickle Ave., and my own private space in the city, just when I to be with friends and not the fake people of south beach. We called them want to be’s. There’s more to this story than you could even imagine. Hope you like a little history. I actually miss those days. They were filled with real people. It was a different time. I guess thats why I left 11 years ago and came to the Orlando area. To maybe see something like that grow and be a part of it. Diane
